Cherry tree

How to water

The cherry tree does not need abundant watering, but during the first year, after planting, it is good to keep the soil moist, if the summer will bring heat and dryness, while the adult cherry trees do not need to be irrigated. As a plant, the cherry tree fears very much water stagnation, therefore it is advisable to prefer a drained and cool soil, without exaggerated watering. As for pruning, it must be done every three years, removing the sick or old branches and maybe even those damaged by atmospheric precipitation. But the most important prunings are usually carried out in the early stages of the cherry tree’s development to make changes to the shape of its foliage. There are some varieties that need to be cleared of suckers, as they develop quickly.

How to cultivate

Cherry is a plant that is easily cultivated, it is rustic and resistant as it exceeds even the most intense frosts very well. However, before starting cultivation it is good to look for a place that is sunny; in fact, in the absence of direct sunlight, the plant will have a scarcity of flowers. There are some types of cherry that need to be planted close to other plants to ensure good fruit production. To plant a cherry it is good to wait until autumn and as a cultivation technique it is necessary to reserve a large space for it among other trees. This plant has usually abundant and extraordinary flowering, but this is not always the case also for its fruits. In fact, it may happen that the pollination fails due to various genetic incompatibilities or due to too insistent rains during flowering. In fact, insects are hindered and are unable to settle on the flowers.

How to fertilize

The soil that must be used for the good cultivation of the cherry tree must not be excessively moist or poorly drained; it doesn’t even have to be cold or too compact. But the sweet cherry has somewhat different needs, in fact it loves the siliceous and deep earth. However, it is always good to remove the weeds that only bring annoyance to the plant. To do this you can use the hoe or you can use herbicides. Fertilization is given in winter with potassium sulfate and superphosphate. Otherwise it is possible to fertilize in autumn or at the end of winter with mature organic fertilizer which will then be distributed at the base of the trunk or by administering fertilizer with nitrogen that slowly dissolves in the soil.

Cherry: Exposure and parasites

The cherry tree loves being in the sun and withstands many types of weather. The problem of abundant and persistent rains produces considerable damage, but also the problem of birds lashing themselves on the plant becomes a headache to solve. In fact, it is good to cover the plants themselves with special nets to protect them or to use sounds that disturb the attackers. The cherry tree is usually attacked by various insects such as aphids, spider mites and others. Ultimately, the cherry tree can be divided into bitter or sweet. In Italy, among the varieties of cherries you can find that of Vignola which is red, with a tender and dark pulp or the durone, which has fruits with firm and pink pulp and when ripe it becomes red. On the other hand, among the most bitter varieties here are red sour cherries with a sour taste then the Regina type which has a lighter shade of red and is rather large. Cherry wood is also beautiful and appreciated for its quality of considerable value; in fact this plant is not known only for its fruits.
