The leaves of plants

The plant world is characterized in many different ways, each of which can affect the human being from the emotional point of view or even from the scientific one; and in this way we begin to search, classify and study all the examples of existing plants. in general, scientific research on plants focuses on flowers and their functions, on reproduction mechanisms (of which plants really offer many and “imaginative” examples) and also on the leaves, their shape and also the task they have at interior of plant life. Most of the leaves have a fundamental task for the plant they are part of: there are those who carry out chlorophyll photosynthesis by collecting solar rays on their surface, those who capture insects having a particular shape, those who conserve water as much as possible by now being a thorn.

Compound leaves

There are many types of leaves, classified mainly on the basis of their shape and how they are arranged and linked to the plant of origin; we immediately say that the main distinction is: single leaves or compound leaves, where the former have a single-bodied leaf, while the latter have a leaf that divides into several leaflets (this is the technical term with which they are indicated). They are divided into unifogliata (a leaflet, such as citrus aurantium), bifoliate (Vicia), trifoliate (such as the known Bituminaria) or even multi-leafed if there are more than three leaflets. Further classifications see describe the leaf in pinnate or palmata, where the former are leaflets that branch out along a stem in an even (paripennata) or odd (imparipennata) way,

Search and functions

Despite the numerous studies conducted on plants and their leaves, for very few species it was possible to understand or guess what led the leaves to assume a particular shape; most of the time this has happened in self-evident cases, such as those of Ascids (carnivorous plants), where it is evident that the leaf has the shape of a “container with a lid” to capture the prey insect. In most cases, however, this has not been possible to guess, also because it should go back to millions of years of history and evolution, including all those events, even minimal, that have induced a structural change to every species of plant, and it is a really hard work.
