DIY vertical garden

Vertical garden make dates: the idea

The vertical garden or green wall is actually not a fashion of recent times as many think. Professional gardeners and gardening enthusiasts will already know that the idea of exploiting the vertical areas available in the garden has been used for centuries. Just think of the typical rural houses of noblemen from the north of France. Many of these will come to mind with ivy-covered facades or other climbing plants. In the gardens of the Royal Palace of Caserta or Versailles, you can see walls covered with flowers or creepers. In the 90s, when the fashion for ecological and eco-sustainable food began in America, in addition to the idea of urban gardens, some New York architects modernized the ancient idea of climbing plants to exploit the vertical spaces present in the terraces or apartments of the skyscrapers of the metropolis. Hence the original idea of the “green wall” used by gardeners for centuries, it turned into the fashion of the DIY vertical garden, real eco-sustainable urban gardens and above all suitable for approaching anyone, even those who do not have much space , to the world of plants.

Vertical garden make dates: use

The idea in the 90s was worked on by New York architects to optimize the spaces of urban gardens. But that doesn’t mean it can be its only purpose. If you have a small or a large garden to decorate, and you want to put something different and more original than the usual ivy to cover that old wall for example, the vertical garden technique can be perfect to give a really trendy and alternative touch of color. to your garden. In fact, it will be enough to alternate various flowering plants of various colors, to create truly incredible personalized compositions! You can use the idea on your terrace, to organize all the plants that gave you the last Christmas, or simply to make room without having to give up your green passion. If, on the other hand, you are passionate about cooking, you can take advantage of a vertical space in the house that you do not want to fill with the usual framework, to create a garden of aromatic plants or small vegetable plants.

DIY vertical garden: bottle technique

If you intend to try your hand at the vertical garden technique, but because of inexperience you don’t want to reverse a lot of money, you can use one of the most ecological, eco-sustainable and economical ideas that exist: the bottle technique! container your bottles, but keep them. When you have enough, already ten compartments just fine, get yourself a nylon line (those for fishing), earth, nails, hammer and of course the plants or seeds that interest you most. Cut the bottles. You can do it in two ways: either halfway creating two narrow but long jars, or for the length, creating a hole big enough for the whole side of the bottle. Drill them and pass the nylon thread, so that you can hang them on a pair of fairly strong nails. Place them according to the cut that you naturally gave them! If you have made two vases from a bottle, place them vertically; cut lengthwise, place them horizontally. You will see how by hanging them one by one, it will begin to fill the wall. Soil and seeds and your vertical garden is ready!

Do-it-yourself vertical garden: pallet technique

Another economic system is that of pallets. Get some old pallets, possibly unpainted. Sand them a little (just to ensure that you do not fill your hands with splinters when taking care of your garden), but it is not necessary if you do not want to. decide what will be the fund that will go against the wall. This part you will need to cover with a waterproof fabric. Once the bottom is covered the rest of the work is really simple. Fill this pallet closed by fabric for the sides and back, with earth, and placing it vertically you will realize that it is made up of “balconies” full of earth. Well, that’s where you can sow or plant your favorite plants, be they flowering or aromatic plants.
