What evergreens are in the garden?

Broad-leaved trees are plants characterized by broad foliage, unlike coniferous trees: the latter include the entire family of evergreen Conifers. How to distinguish broadleaf evergreen varieties within a garden? First of all, broad-leaved trees can have simple leaves or compound leaves; from the observation of the first it is easy to realize that the shapes can be very different from each other according to the varieties: from the lanceolate leaves of the Willows to the oval ones of the Cherry trees to the heart-shaped ones of the Lime trees … then there are trees with palmatolobate or pinnatolobate foliage . From this it is easy to understand that a hardwood garden can appear extremely luxuriant, thanks to the richness of the foliage. But it is important to distinguish broad-leaved trees with deciduous leaves, subject to winter vegetative rest, from evergreens, which instead guarantee an abundance of greenery throughout the year. Not allevergreen broad-leaved trees can acclimate in the garden: let’s see which are the most common in our places.

Having assessed the structure of the garden based on size, exposure and seasonality, which evergreen broad-leaved trees will be most suitable for our areas? Ligustrum lucidum, or the glossy privet, for example, grows as a tree or as an evergreen shrub native to China, cultivated as an ornamental shade plant in Europe in urban centers. From a tree it reaches a height of 15 meters, from a shrub about half. The leaves are dark green with lighter, smooth and pointed vertical stripes. The hair is rich and rather broad. Much taller, with less broad umbrella-like foliage, is the Magnolia grandiflora or white Magnolia, an evergreen native to the United States that reaches up to 30 meters. The leaves have a bright green color on the upper face, while on the lower one they are brown-orange, with a really interesting effect. Widespread in Italy, Olea europea, the traditional olive tree, is an ancient tree originating from Syria with modestly sized ellipsoidal leaves, dark green on the upper side and silvery gray on the lower face.

Evergreen deciduous trees in the garden: scents and symbols

Inside the garden it can be pleasant to grow shrubs or evergreen broad-leaved trees particularly fragrant due to some characteristics of the foliage: this is the case of Laurus nobilis, the Laurel, a shrub native to the Mediterranean, with whose aromatic leaves the ancient Romans prepared reserved crowns to poets and heroes and that we now use above all as a condiment in the kitchen. In general it is planted as a hedge, although the tree can reach 12 meters in height. The leaves are dark green and leathery, and give off an intense aroma. Ilex aquifolium, the common Holly, is instead a variety of evergreen broad-leaved trees of great decorative and symbolic effect: the leaves, used during the Christmas holidays and unmistakable, are shiny, waxy on the upper face, with margins often with sharp thorns, but in any case very different in appearance and with different fruits according to the varieties. The tree can reach 20 meters but it is also possible to get a hedge in the garden.

Evergreen Garden Trees: Exotic gardens with evergreen deciduous trees

If you have the possibility and the desire to cultivate an exotic-looking garden, evergreen broad-leaved trees that are difficult to acclimatize but very particular in form will be indispensable. Although the Juniperus (Junipers) of the Cupressaceae family are mostly coniferous, the Japanese Walnut or Junglas ailantifolia is a broad-leaved evergreen up to 15 meters tall with leaves composed of 11-17 lanceolate leaflets, rather decorative.
