Fake hedge

Hedges are mainly used to screen a garden or area from the view of strangers: in essence, they are not pure and simple decorative elements, but dense and compact screens, which prevent neighbors from observing us when we take a nap in the garden , or that make our land impenetrable to the neighbor’s dog looking for a place to deposit his excrement. In some cases it is impossible to plant shrubs, such as on a terrace or on an embankment positioned above the garages; in other cases, the owners of the garden do not wish to plant a long line of shrubs, which will then be regularly pruned and cared for. For this reason we find many materials on the market that allow you to create a border covering structure, similar to green and lush hedges, which actually consist of thin panels, in plastic or plant material. In this way you get all the advantages of having a hedge, without having to take care of it constantly.

Materials available

The most common fake hedges are made of plastic panels, on which different types of leaves (always in plastic) are fixed, in some cases also equipped with fake fruits or fake flowers. The result from a distance perfectly simulates a real hedge of shrubs, while in reality it is a panel fixed to the fence. This type of fake hedges can also be used on the balustrades of terraces and balconies, and is completely shielding. Generally it is a green shade cloth, but there are many different colors available; various types of leaves are fixed on this cloth, to simulate an ivy, a photinia, a privet, a piracanta. There are also bamboo reed panels, painted in green, to simulate an expanse of plants of this essence;

Pros and cons of fake hedges

The main advantage of a fake hedge is that it does not require care: the plants that make up a hedge must be pruned, watered, fertilized, treated in case of parasites; fake hedges are simple plastic sheets, which at most can lose a few leaves due to a strong hailstorm. So they allow us to have the advantages of a thick hedge, without having to spend whole afternoons taking care of it. Of course there are also flaws; first of all the fact of not having plants along the border: the plants absorb most of the pollution and keep the air clean, as well as attracting beneficial insects and giving a pleasant appearance to the garden. Furthermore, plants are practically eternal: for decades they vegetate, develop, grow. Unfortunately the fake hedges, even if made of a material resistant to sunlight, with the passage of time they tend to fade, get dirty with smog and deteriorate. They will therefore be periodically replaced, or washed.

Low maintenance hedges

If you want a hedge, but haven’t planted it yet, fearing that shrubs may cause too many hours of work for their care, you can go to the nursery to choose low-maintenance plants. There are border and hedge plants that do not overgrow, or that do not require regular pruning or excessive care. For example, the trachelospermum jasminoides: it is a climber, which, like the fake hedge, needs an espalier or a trellis to be able to develop. It has a large growth every year, but in general it tends to form compact structures, which do not necessarily require continuous and regular pruning. In addition, throughout the summer it is covered with beautiful white flowers, very fragrant. Many mixed border plants also do not need great care, especially if you let them develop naturally, and don’t prune them in a square and formal pattern. So viburnums, berberis, evonyms, pittosporum: let grow along the border they will keep you companions for many years.
