Ficus exotica

Ficus exotica

In nature there are many varieties of ficus but, among all, the most widespread is that of Ficus exotica. This ficus, in the areas where it originated, is known to be used by all for ornamental and decorative purposes. This derives from the fact that Ficus exotica represents the most elegant ficus. The main characteristics of these types of plants are represented by the leaves which are very shiny and are made up of rather dark veins. This characteristic is precisely what differentiates the ficus exotica from all the other numerous varieties of the species. Given its tropical origins, these plants need to grow indoors where the climate is hot and humid. It is recommended never to expose it in places where temperatures drop below 10 ° C.

As just written in the previous lines, Ficus exotica is used to developing with tropical temperatures and therefore quite hot, it does not tolerate very low temperatures, on the contrary, it resists without any problem at temperatures that go above 30 ° C. The soil to be used for these plants must be well drained, soft and a little acidic. It is important to know that these plants do not like the formation of water stagnation. To avoid this, it is advisable to place pieces of terracotta below the vase, in order to allow the passage of water. As for the repotting it must be done during the spring period. The ficus exotica should be repotted only when the container in which the plant is placed becomes too small for itself and its roots.

Diseases and parasites

Ficus exotica can be attacked by some parasites including cochineals and mites. These insects are dangerous for plants because they tend to suck the sap and therefore, consequently, weaken our plant. Another characteristic of these parasites is to concentrate on the leaves and deposit a substance similar to honey on them. This slightly sugary substance favors the development of mold and fungal diseases, which is also why mites and cochineals are dangerous for ficus. The damage that could cause the presence of mold and fungi could, in some cases, be irreparable. To effectively eliminate the presence of these small annoying insects we could use insecticides. Some treatments are also helpful in preventing these types of attacks.
