Ficus yellow leaves

Grow the ficus

In nature, the ficus is a plant that can reach majestic dimensions; in our homes, its growth is more contained, also due to the necessary pruning operations that allow you to control the development of the structure and keep the plant healthy, but still retains a great charm that makes it a very suitable plant for cultivation in the apartment, where it is possible to reproduce a suitable climate. Like any plant of tropical and subtropical origin, the ficus does not adapt to withstand the harsh winters in our gardens and therefore finds its place in pots, in such a way as to be sheltered from the cold in the winter period. For these reasons, the ficus is a fairly delicate plant and it is necessary to know how to recreate the conditions suitable for it for healthy and robust growth. This will protect the ficus from any diseases, even if it is a delicate plant and therefore subject to attacks by external agents. Verifying the presence of an ongoing disease or environmental problems, however, is not difficult, as long as you know how to observe the plant: alongside the small spots caused by parasites, the ficus can in fact give life to yellow leaves. This phenomenon, which at first glance may seem curious and decorative, is actually a sign that something is wrong with our ficus and it is therefore important to intervene to restore the health of the plant. as long as you know how to observe the plant: alongside the small spots caused by parasites, the ficus can in fact give life to yellow leaves. Yellow leaves due to environmental causes

As we have seen, the ficus is native to areas of the world with a tropical and subtropical climate; decidedly different, therefore, from what it encounters in our area. For this reason it is necessary to be able to guarantee the right protection to the plant and to recreate an environment as suitable as possible for the needs of this plant. One of the first and most common causes of yellow leaves in ficus concerns the cultivation technique: it is possible that the plant is subjected to too abundant watering, or on the contrary too scarce. The ficus in fact needs a constantly humid soil, but suffers from water stagnation: for this reason the watering should not be too abundant but regular, every time the soil begins to dry out. If the cause of the presence of yellow leaves is a crop error of this type, by restoring the optimal conditions of development of the plant also the symptom will disappear and the ficus will return to being in perfect health. Another environmental cause responsible for the yellowing of the leaves is instead exposure to too rigid temperatures: for this reason it is essential to remember to take the plant to the shelter at the beginning of the bad season and to keep the ficus in an environment in which the temperatures they do not drop below 14 degrees. Bringing the ficus indoors is not enough: it is also necessary to make sure that it is not exposed to cold currents, which could cause the same disturbance. exposure to too cold temperatures: this is why it is essential to remember to take the plant to the shelter at the beginning of the bad season and to store the ficus in an environment where temperatures do not drop below 14 degrees. Yellow leaves and diseases

However, the climatic conditions do not always give rise to the yellowing of the leaves: if on the underside of the yellowed leavesyou notice small spots or dots, you can be sure that you are in the presence of a parasitic infestation. By feeding on the sap extracted from the leaves, the parasites cause a general weakening that causes the plant to yellow. The presence of parasites should not be underestimated or ignored: able to spread quickly, the colonizing insects would end up causing the death of the plant. The most common parasite regarding the colonization of ficus is the red spider. Recognizing its presence from the simple yellowing of the leaves due to unfavorable environmental conditions is quite simple: the leaf, in this case, will also have spots on the underside, it will begin to curl up and fall.

Ficus yellow leaves: How to intervene

If the cause of the yellowing of the leaves lies in the incorrect conditions of cultivation, restoring optimal conditions also the ficus will return to grow healthy and luxuriant. In case of parasites, however, it is important to intervene decisively to eliminate the insects which, if not completely removed, would resume proliferating. If colonization is at an early stage and the presence of parasites is still low, it is possible to remove them using a cotton swab soaked in alcohol, taking care to eliminate them completely. This will allow to intervene without damaging the plant in any way. Otherwise, you will have to resort to the use of specific products, which will eliminate the presence of parasites depending on the type that has affected the ficus.
