Garden flower beds

Gardens in history

The gardens have always been the ideal complement to the sumptuous residences of nobles and rulers. Over the centuries they have developed according to different models: particularly appreciated and widespread was the romantic «English» garden, where the natural elements were arranged in a fake random and disordered way, so as to create the pleasant effect of the «picturesque». The true ancestor of modern flowerbeds, however, is the «Italian style» garden, which established itself in the late Renaissance: it was characterized by a careful and meditated geometric division of spaces and provided for the design of expert specialists. This effect of rational and rigid geometry was obtained through the use of shaped hedges, trees placed side by side in long orderly rows, fountains and basins;

The preparation of a garden flower bed is not a complicated operation but it requires some precautions: you must first delimit the area (making sure, in choosing it, that it is adequately exposed to the sun’s rays); then, with the help of a spade, reclaim the soil, eliminating the weeds. The next step is to level the ground, covering it with a plastic sheet, called «mulch», which has the task of preventing the regrowth of weeds. At this point you can proceed with sowing either by transplanting plants that have already bloomed into pots, if you want more immediate results, or by inserting the seeds in the ground, if you are willing to wait a bit before the flower bed blooms. To create a pleasant effect of dynamism, the plants can be arranged according to zigzag or curvilinear paths;

The color combinations can be made with great freedom and will allow you to indulge your imagination. An alternative solution, but always very pleasant, is to insert succulent plants in the flowerbeds, which do not even require too continuous irrigation care. In many gardens there are also flower beds with aromatic herbs (mint, sage, thyme, rosemary), faithful and healthy allies of our cuisine.
