The gravel for the garden: the characteristics and the varieties

Depending on the use to which you want to allocate, you can choose between different varieties of gravel for the garden, which differ from each other in size. In fact, on the market there is coarse garden gravel (whose diameter even reaches 6 centimeters), or medium or small gravel (for which the diameter values ​​vary between 1 and 3 centimeters). On the market there are varieties of natural colored gravel (white, gray or light gray) or, for decorative purposes, colored gravel. The most common colors are pearl gray, various shades of blue and red, or mixed gravel with different shades. You can buy garden gravel both in direct production sites (quarries) and in shops for building materials. Small bags can also be found for small areas.

How to use garden gravel

The use of garden gravel allows you to have an inexpensive and simple alternative to traditional flooring. In fact, it can be spread quickly without having to resort to the use of labor and without having to carry out long maintenance interventions. Furthermore, garden gravel has the advantage of favoring the drainage of rainwater, preventing the formation of puddles. The gravel can be used to cover the most used walkable areas, to create paths and paths, to surround the gazebo or to delimit and decorate the edge of flower beds and paths. As already mentioned, garden gravel does not require any maintenance: it will be sufficient to periodically eliminate the weeds, any dry leaves and dust (for colored gravel).

How to lay garden gravel

Garden gravel is very easy to spread and, consequently, very easy to remove once it is no longer needed or you want to change the look of our garden. Usually, gravel of different sizes is used: the one with a diameter of 1 centimeter and the one with a diameter of 3. Its main function is to cover the passage areas in the garden. To find out how much gravel you need, just multiply the surface of the area to be covered by the thickness of the gravel itself: the result is expressed in cubic meters. It is advisable to dig the ground on which the gravel is to be spread to a depth of about 20 centimeters, so that the crushed stone has a solid base. In some cases, gravels with a different diameter can be used. In these cases, when spreading the gravel, a fabric is used to separate the two different layers. Geotextiles can be found on the market to prevent the different thickness of the layers from creating non-uniform areas and, consequently, holes or depressions. For this, the gravel must be carefully spread. If you want to make a gravel driveway, it is advisable to spread a layer of mulch fabric on the level ground: this will avoid water stagnation and the growth of weeds. The edges of the driveway will be delimited with aluminum curbs; then just spread the gravel on the path of the driveway and spread it out using a rake.
