Garden paths

The paths in the garden: characteristics and functions

There are many ideas and systems that allow you to create a well-kept and well-organized garden, both in the case of small gardens or large lawns. To make the environment more functional and aesthetically pleasing, garden paths can be created: the latter are not only really practical, but give a suggestive and particular style to the garden and to the whole house. The paths in the garden can be short and very simple paths or have the appearance of real streets, complete with curves and gradients. Usually, garden paths are designed and built to obviate organizational needs: for example, they connect two points in the garden and allow you to move around as quickly and easily as possible; they define different areas of the garden;

Styles and materials with which a driveway can be made

With the right organization, putting in a little effort and applying some original ideas, you can create a functional element of considerable aesthetic impact. The best way to create garden paths that are natural and captivating is to give vent to your creativity. The choices available are endless, starting with the materials: they range from the use of stones (more or less large, natural or artificial), bricks, wooden planks, tiles or gravel. In addition, you can decide to combine and integrate any element that strikes our imagination and that allows us to create garden paths with a unique style and responding to our tastes, and which, moreover, harmonizes with the surrounding environment. For example, if you want to adopt a modern style, you can opt for tiled garden paths, which are flanked by minimalist lighting systems. Alternatively, opting for a classic style, you can use natural stone or mosaic tiles.

How to make garden paths with DIY

As already mentioned, the garden paths can be in different materials, but their realization presents very different costs and difficulties in laying depending on the chosen option. The cheapest solution (but still extremely beautiful and interesting) is to make garden paths with do-it-yourself concrete slabs. In fact, you can buy plastic molds in different shapes in any shop to make sheets whose appearance meets our tastes. Furthermore, if you want to save even more, you can also DIY the molds, using only nails and wooden strips. Let’s see the procedure in detail. First, you need to lubricate the molds (bought or handcrafted) with a rag soaked in oil.

Garden Paths: Steps for a driveway with do-it-yourself concrete slabs

First of all it is necessary to excavate the area of the garden where the driveway will be created. In fact, the slabs that make up the driveway are usually flush with the ground, so the excavation must be twice as deep as the thickness of the stones. Part of the excavated soil will be used to fill the joints between one slab and another (they can be, depending on your taste, more or less wide, bare or filled with grass). At the bottom of the excavation a layer of sand as thick as the slabs is positioned, which will act as a base and will absorb rainwater. Therefore, the slabs can be made simply by pouring the concrete into the molds. In addition, the concrete must be compressed well and the surface of the slab smoothed well. Shortly after an hour, the plates are ready: they turn out by beating lightly with a hammer on the mold. It is good to avoid walking on the slabs for at least 4 or 5 days.
