Garden paths

Garden paths: the simplest technique

Several techniques can be used to make garden paths. The easiest and most widespread is that of stone slabs, drowned directly on the lawn. The rains and the earth will fix your driveway over time. The stone slabs used, in general, are real «tiles» measuring 30×30 centimeters. They are small rounded stones mixed with cement. It is a material that is easy to find and very easy to use, and also quite cheap. As mentioned, just place the slabs on the lawn, leaving a space of about 5 centimeters between them. One after the other they will form the driveway. The only drawback, if we can call it that, is the fact that between one tile and the next you will have to mow the grass by hand, using the appropriate lawn shears. It is not advisable, in fact,

Real stones, the driveway becomes beautiful

The plates we talked about previously are of a very economical type. If we want to use the same technique but want a result that is both longer lasting and qualitatively superior, then we must use real stone slabs. The finishes and colors of these slabs give the possibility to infinite solutions. Even the irregular shapes, once properly «wedged», will give a truly particular overview. It must be remembered that some space must be left between the slab and slab, and that in any case it will not be possible to mow the grass mechanically. In addition to the slabs, there are stones with particular but regular shapes, which will form a real road once «drowned» on the lawn. The technique is the same but the result is completely different.

Gravel or bark?

The garden pathsin gravel are the most classic. Easy to make, but not with DIY. The gravel is mainly used on paths, and avenues, where the use is quite high. They are also suitable in situations that require the passage of vehicles, even large ones, or simply on foot. They are not recommended for those who use shoes with high heels, in fact, in addition to scratching the surface of the heel itself, they would sink into the gravel in an irregular way, jeopardizing the stability of the walk. Before the «scattering» of the small stones, a compact but draining seat must be created. It is also necessary to take into account the provision of a slope, in order to eliminate the annoying problems of water stagnation. If the driveway is not very busy, instead of gravel, another completely natural material can be used: bark. In both cases, know that maintenance must be constant, with replenishments of material and rake passes to eliminate the grooves that will surely be created.

So far we have seen cheap materials, stone slabs, gravel and bark; obviously there are also other kinds and nature. Self-locking bricks, for example, can become a good solution for our driveway. Even in this case, do-it-yourself is not recommended. The self-locking, once placed on the ground, will make your driveway perfectly passable, both on foot and by car. It is the solution that requires less maintenance. In fact, the layer of sand where the bricks will rest will ensure that no weeds will grow. In case you want an even more radical solution, instead of the staro of sand, a real concrete casting will have to be made. In this case, however, the creation of wells for the collection of waste water and its channeling will be considered.
