What are Goji berries

Goji berries are small fruits produced by Lycium barbarum, a spontaneous shrub belonging to the Solanaceae family, the same as tomatoes, potatoes and peppers. The origin of Lycium barbarum, a perennial shrub, is Asian, more precisely from the Himalayan regions, including North China, Nepal and Mongolia. It is a plant with high resistance to wind, extremely cold temperatures and rain, factors that allow the shrub to grow spontaneously in different conditions, even if it prefers flat and possibly humid places. A peculiarity of this plant are the fruits it produces, characteristic berries with a sweet flavor and a red color, consumed in Asia for several millennia now.

Properties of Goji berries

Goji berries contain proteins, carbohydrates, calcium, sugars, phosphorus, a high percentage of fiber, omega three and omega six, as well as several types of vitamins, including C, present in an even greater percentage than orange. Considering the presence of these nutritional principles, Goji berries are able to bring numerous benefits to the body. They promote blood circulation, regulate metabolism, improve muscle tissues, strengthen the immune system, help keep hair and skin young. Goji berries are also known for their antioxidant power and are used for the prevention and treatment of oncological diseases. Thanks to the good content of carotenoids, they are excellent for maintaining eye health.

Use Goji berries

In Asia, Goji berries have been used for millennia in the food industry, to prepare soups or as a seasoning for roasts. In Europe they are rarely present in their original form, but they can easily be found in any herbalist’s shop. They are marketed in different ways, mainly as dried berries, which can be used together with yogurt, cereals and salads. Another type of marketing of Goji berries are fruit juices, both concentrated and diluted, excellent for stimulating the immune system. Goji berries can come in the form of powder, obtained by grinding the berries and generally taken with a glass of water. Finally, there are food supplements based on Goji berries on the market, usually packaged in capsules.

Goji Berries: How to use Goji Berries

Goji berries are, without a doubt, a real panacea for health. They are suitable for individuals of any age, but it is still essential to take them respecting the recommended doses. If ingested in berries, you should not take more than fifteen grams of product daily, equivalent to about eighty berries. If consumed in compliance with the doses, Goji berries are able to produce immediate effects in the body, already noticeable after a few days from the beginning of the intake, increasing energy and general physical well-being. To obtain more significant and long-lasting results, it is recommended to take Goji berries for at least three consecutive weeks, interrupting their intake for a couple of weeks, and then starting a new cycle.
