Guzmania

Guzmania

Belonging to the Bromeliaceae family, Guzmania is native to the southwestern areas of America and the Antilles. It is an evergreen and epiphytic plant but there are some terrestrial species that are made up of long and rigid green leaves that can be streaked or variegated according to the species they belong to. Guzmania can reach a maximum of 50 centimeters in height. The peculiarity of this plant is the arrangement of the leaves: they are a rosette enlarged in the center as if to form a “cup” in which rainwater stagnates. They also fill up with flora and fauna formed by animal and vegetable residues which through decomposition release nutrients subsequently absorbed by the plant, which thus manages to feed itself even freeing itself from the roots.

Some species

This type of genus groups more or less 120 different species, we list and describe some of the most widespread: the Guzmanialingulata, the Guzmanialindenii, the Guzmaniazahnii, the Guzmania conifera, the Guzmania musaica and the Guzmania tricolor. Guzmanialingulata has white-yellow flowers that grow inside the rosette of leaves enclosed by bracts of a red color. This species does not exceed 30 centimeters in height. Guzmanialindeii is an epiphytic species with the characteristic that its flowers are white. Guzmaniazahnii is an epiphytic species consisting of thin and long green leaves, has the shape of a red rosette in the center and its flowers are between white and yellow. It does not exceed 60 centimeters in height. The Guzmania conifera can reach up to one meter in height, has long leaves, stiff and narrow. It consists of red bracts that go to orange at the apex. Guzmania musaica can reach 50 centimeters in height and, the light green leaves, have red and dark green streaks. Guzmania tricolor is an epiphytic species that blooms in summer and is very rare as a terrestrial plant. It has leaves up to 45 centimeters wide and the bracts are white and green with purple.

Cultivation

Guzmania is an easy to grow plant also because it does not require a lot of attention. The ideal temperatures for their growth vary between 15 – 20 ° C, they do not like to be placed in places with lower temperatures while instead they can bear the higher ones as long as the environment is kept humid. Guzmania needs to be displayed in a well-lit environment but does not like direct sunlight. As for irrigation, the plant should be watered regularly because it needs a moist but not wet soil, it does not like water stagnation. For watering it is recommended to use rainwater or calcareous water after boiling it with a drop of vinegar. That small “jar” in the center of the plant must always be full of limestone-free water, it must be changed every 15 days. In the winter, irrigations must be reduced, the only precaution is to keep the soil a little moist. The plant’s favorite soil is a mixture of peat, coarse sand and bark. It is advisable to use terracotta pots so that the plant breathes and also, the pot must not be much larger because the more soil there is, the more stagnation is favored. Repotting should be done when the roots, growing, are no longer healthy and need more space. it must not be much larger because the more land there is, the more stagnation is favored. Diseases and parasites

What can weaken and damage the plant is not only the presence of parasites but, sometimes, it is the wrong cultivation methods that make the plant sick. When the leaves take on a rather pale color it means that we have placed it in a place with too intense light, vice versa, if the leaves become a dark green color it means that they are exposed in places with poor lighting and therefore, for both problems , we can provide by moving and positioning the plant differently. When we notice that the leaves are starting to turn brown, there could be problems with the roots of the plant caused by wrong irrigation. We can remedy this by removing the plant from the pot, checking the state of the roots and, if the roots are rotten, we must eliminate them. Then we spread the surfaces with fungicides and let the earth dry, then we repot the plant being careful not to water it for at least a week, the water should only be placed in the central “jar”. As for the parasites that can affect Guzmania are: the cochineal, the red spider and the lice. To remove the cochineal just take a cotton swab soaked in alcohol and rub it on the leaves or wash the plant with soap and water, remembering to rinse it well. To remove the spider mite just increase the humidity that is created around the plant or, in more serious cases, use a specific acaricide. Lice, on the other hand, small yellow – green – white insects, can be eliminated by using specific pesticides that can be purchased in a good store. then we repot the plant taking care not to water it for at least a week, the water should only be placed in the central “jar”.
