Handkerchief tree

Handkerchief tree: general characteristics

The handkerchief tree, belonging to the Davidiaceae family and coming from the regions of eastern China, is a specimen with an erect and slow-growing stem. It is able to reach a maximum size of about 20 meters, has light green leaves on the lower part of which there is a sort of down, they are sharp and have serrated edges. The inflorescences are produced only after about 8 years, and form a sort of white daisy, with a shape similar to that of handkerchiefs. The flowers are both male and bisexual. During the autumn season, red fruits develop and when they reach maturity, they turn rusty; they have a woody seed inside them, which can be used for the propagation of the davidian plant.

Handkerchief tree: cultivation

The handkerchief tree is a rustic specimen that fears full sun, in this regard it is convenient to plant it in a semi-shady environment. It fears the colds of the winter season that last for long periods, in this regard it is convenient to place it in a place protected from bad weather. The young specimens of Davidia require abundant and frequent watering, especially during the first periods. The adult specimens, on the other hand, do not need irrigation because they use rainwater. In the event that a long period of drought occurs, it is convenient to water the specimen, facilitating its normal and flourishing vegetative development.

Handkerchief tree: fertilization and pruning

As previously stated, the handkerchief tree does not require specific care, however, it is advisable to periodically fertilize the specimen and possibly carry out some pruning of the aerial apparatus. As for fertilization, it must take place during the spring season using common organic and mature fertilizer to be placed at the base of the plant. In this way you will notice a more luxuriant growth of the foliage and inflorescences. If it is observed that the young tree does not produce flowers, it should be remembered that these specimens develop their inflorescences during the month of May and only after a few years (about 8 years) from their planting. Pruning must only take place to eliminate any dry, infested branches, or simply to reduce the size of the crown.

Handkerchief tree: multiplication

The multiplication of the handkerchief tree can take place by seed, cutting or by taking the offshoots. As for sowing, it must take place during the month of October, and it is very important that the soil is kept well moist without creating water stagnations. The multiplication by cutting takes place by cutting the chosen branch during the summer season, placing it in a soil composed of fertile earth, sand, and kept at the right level of humidity. When the daughter plant produces an autonomous root system, it can be planted in the open ground. Finally, propagation can take place through offshoots; in other words, the chosen branch is taken, an incision is made with the knife and buried.
