Indian ficus

the Indian Ficus, as you might guess from the name itself, is native to the tropical areas of Asia such as India. It is an evergreen plant that adapts to both pot and open ground cultivation, with the difference that it has different characteristics. If the ficus is grown in the ground it can reach a height of 30 meters; if instead it is grown in pot, the maximum height is 3 meters. The Indian Ficus has a smooth gray-brown bark; its leaves, rigid and leathery to the touch, are shiny and oval in shape and are also very large, their dimensions are equal to 25 – 30 centimeters. In its areas of origin it was nicknamed as “Ficus del cacciù” for the latex inside it which was used for the creation of cacciù.

The cultivation of this plant is not difficult, in fact the Indian Ficus is known as an ornamental plant and is very common in apartments in European areas. The ideal soil for this type of plant is soft, well-drained potting soil or we could create a mixture of sand, universal soil, and shredded bark. The ficus can stand the cold, it is preferable to expose it in places where the temperatures are not below 12 – 15 ° C. Ficuses need to grow in well-lit places but do not like direct sunlight. During hot periods it is possible to keep them in open places, unlike in cold periods. Particular attention must be maintained when we move the plant from closed to open places, they do not like drafts and even less temperature changes. As for irrigation, the Ficus Indiano, needs regular watering during the period from April to September; during the cold periods the irrigations must be reduced.

It does not need particular care, but it is advisable to spray water on the leaves in order to maintain a high level of humidity. We must pay attention to the place where we place it to avoid that the plant is subjected to risks, the leaves are very delicate and can suffer trauma and preserve the scars. The latex extracted from its leaves is not only used for cacciù but also as glue, raw materials for rubber. The most suitable species for the production of a high quality rubber is Ficus elastica. In some Asian countries, Ficus are used to embellish temples. This type of plant is very suitable for humidifying closed environments such as our apartments and they are also excellent purifiers for the air, another very useful thing for the quality of life at home.
