The water supply

In the cultivation of Leylandii it is necessary to pay close attention to the matter of the water supply. This plant, in fact, is remarkably sensitive to sudden changes and it is recommended to water in moderation but constantly, in order to always guarantee the same amount of water. We will balance our interventions according to the season, i.e. intensifying them in summer and limiting them during spring and autumn if they are naturally rainy. In some areas the atmospheric precipitations may be sufficient and it will be necessary to intervene only when needed. It is important to avoid the formation of stagnation which could cause plant health problems. If our Leylandii hedge covers a large area, it may be necessary to install a fixed irrigation system, favoring the drop type.

For the cultivation of Leylandii we start from the young plant purchased at a nursery inside the pot which we will then place in the home together with the block of earth contained. We will have to be careful, during this operation, not to damage the delicate root system. Leylandii belongs to the same family as the cypress tree, so it will grow very tall, reaching as much as 30m. In places exposed to the wind, a very large plant can be easily uprooted, falling and irreparably damaged as well as being able to cause damage in the surrounding area. Instead, if you want to cultivate it as a hedge, the Leylandii plant can be kept with a regular shape and an always tidy crown. Pruning should be done at least twice a year: in spring and autumn.

The Leylandii adapts quite well to different types of soil, preferring the loose one and with an excellent draining capacity. Obviously we will try to avoid areas characterized by irregularities and clods. For the planting we will have to carry out a preventive preparation of the soil, anticipating the times by at least a couple of weeks, in order to completely absorb the nutrients. The hoeing and digging operation will be energetic, even if you don’t need to go too deep. However, it is preferable to ensure a light substrate, being able to add soil or sand. The fertilizer we will use will be a ready-made organic product or simple mature manure to which we will add home compost. After covering we will wait a few days before planting the Leylandii.

Leylandii: Exposure and Diseases

The Leylandii plant can be grown both as a tree and as a hedge in all regions of Italy. Also in the North there are no particular problems, not even at the hilly altitudes. The plant, in fact, can resist well even at temperatures well below zero. Particularly harsh winters are well tolerated and even hot summer should not represent difficulties in the success of the cultivation. Leylandii will naturally grow 1-2m per year and the only problem will be keeping development at bay. Like other types of cypresses, this hedge plant can also be attacked by fungal diseases that cause the dry branches to turn red. You can use a specific product, easily purchased in nurseries or garden shops. L’
