Olive cutting

The vegetative propagation of the olive tree.

The olive tree can be reproduced sexually or vegetatively, with the latter, however, it is possible to maintain the characteristics of the mother plant in the new individual. All those operations which involve, for the creation of the new plant, the use of parts of the adult plant are grouped in this category. The most used modality is certainly the cutting, in fact many of the plants for sale in the nurseries were created thanks to it. There are also other vegetative reproduction techniques, such as grafting, however they all present characters of greater difficulty in production. Furthermore, it is not possible to obtain a good result by cutting with every variety of olive tree, some, in fact, are not indicated as they cannot branch after cutting the twig.

The right period and some precautions.

To allow the plant to grow in the best conditions and obtain the largest possible number of branches on the total number of cuttings, it is necessary to follow some small precautions. To begin with, it should be emphasized that the best time to collect the twigs to be used for cuttings is certainly autumn / winter. Obviously it is essential to select the branches from a plant free of any disease and also quite fruitful, this is because by maintaining the characteristics of the origin, the new plant will have a better chance of survival. Once planted in the nursery it is always advisable to water them regularly and provide adequate fertilization. Particularly suitable, it turns out to be mature manure or composted droppings. Finally, it is preferable to clean the cutting from the lower branches,

The first stage of the cutting.

To make an olive tree cuttingit starts from one year old twigs. These cuttings must have a green and juicy bark, robust and about 25/50 centimeters. They are then immersed in a specially prepared liquid, containing phytostimulators that favor root development. These solutions can also be produced using natural raw materials, very suitable is, for example, a decoction with weeping willow twigs. After this operation, the cuttings are ready to meet the ground for the first time and crates are placed, which are very often at a controlled temperature to ensure optimal conditions for the seedlings. In this very delicate phase, irrigation is carried out regularly, even with the use of sprays. water directly on the leaves, always keeping the temperature under control. After about two months the cuttings have developed their first roots and are ready for the second phase of the process.

At this point we have branches, or cuttings, with a fair number of roots, which, however, are still small and delicate. With extreme care, therefore, they are eradicated from the crates and placed in jars where they will continue their growth process. Often this is the time when a selection is made of the cuttings that have reacted best to root production. This is because, especially in the professional field, where those who produce are interested in selling the plants thus formed, by selecting only the best plants, they are sure of the final result, that is to have stronger and more fruitful adult plants. Once the cuttings continue to grow, you can move them into larger and larger pots, until they are ready for the open field.
