The olive tree: a plant with mythological origins and enchanting beauty.

The olive tree is a plant of the Oleaceae family, with an ultra-millennial perspective of life that has fascinated men for several generations, so much so that it has a mythological origin. According to the Greek myth it was Athena who planted the first olive tree on the Agora to protect her city. But sometimes the reality is even more astounding than the legend; in fact, through archaeological studies the traces of the oldest olive tree date back to seven thousand years ago, and have been found in Asia Minor. The olive tree is an evergreen tree that has a light-colored trunk with a twisted appearance, and a base with an imposing diameter. The leaves have an intense green color on the upper page and whitish on the lower one. Flowering occurs in the period of May-June and not all the flowers will then become fruit due to the floral abortion. Finally, the oil that is used every day in the kitchen is extracted from the pulp of these fruits, which are first greenish and then purplish in color.

Olive tree maintenance and pruning techniques.


To keep an olive tree healthy, constant maintenance is essential. Pruning is the basis of the latter and allows you to give the foliage the shape you want, to stimulate production and eliminate sick or dry branches, to improve the passage of air and light inside the crown and to slow ‘aging. Unfortunately for olive trees there is no precise guideline to follow when they are pruned, but there are still several tips that can be implemented. First of all, the pruning period generally includes the months of March, April and May, and the tools used must always be very sharp to avoid fraying the bark and thus transmit any infections. To promote the drainage of rainwater it is also useful to prune that leaves a cutting surface inclined towards the outside. Regarding the age of the tree, it has a great influence on the frequency of pruning. In fact, younger trees must be left freer to grow, while very old trees need continuous maintenance.

Different types of olive harvest


There are several techniques that can be used to harvest the olives, there is the spontaneous fall, the combing, the shaking of the olives and finally the hand-picking. As for the spontaneous fall it is by far the cheapest technique and that requires less work, but it is also the most not recommended technique as it requires the olives to fall by themselves once ripe. The defect of this technique is that the olive remains on the tree for too long and thus loses most of the organoleptic and nutritional qualities of the oil. Combing and shaking are the techniques most used by large oil producers as they provide that through the use and action of large rakes and mechanical arms the olives detach themselves from the tree and fall into the nets placed halfway up. The last technique is that of hand picking, which is very common at home but impractical on an industrial level due to its immense labor costs. It guarantees the best harvest as by hand-picking the olives you can carefully choose which ones are really ripe and which ones to still grow.

The costs of olive trees vary according to the different types taken into consideration and above all according to the age, the diameter of the branches and the trunk. If you want to save money and are able to grow an olive tree then the best solution is to buy one with just one year of age which is easily found at the price of five or ten euros, or buy a bonsai that costs around seven. EUR. Prices obviously increase in step with the age and size of the tree and also dramatically, even reaching up to 5000-6000 euros. If you have a large garden and want to fill it with a beautiful olive tree that already boasts of 100-150 years of age, then you have to spend around 2000 euros if you find an advantageous price, or even 3000 if instead the reference point of sale does not have cheap prices. Therefore you cannot set a precise price but you have to adapt to your needs and above all to the space available.
