Olive tree pruning, how to do it

Features and Benefits

The pruning of the olive tree represents one of the determining elements in the production of the plant. The operation is in fact aimed at eliminating all those branches that, unproductive, feed on the vital lymph of the trunk, depriving the correct maintenance of those that instead produce fruit. The thinning of the branches that are not useful allows to guarantee the right amount of natural light and air also to the internal part of the foliage, thus favoring the growth and ripening of its fruits. The containment of this plant is also important, as the olive tree is a species whose foliage would tend to soar in height. As for the olive tree pruning techniques, it should be noted that the intervention can be carried out manually or with the aid of machinery. This

When to prune

Olive pruning is generally carried out every two years in winter, in the period immediately following the harvest. The choice to carry out this intervention at the same time as the olive harvest, allows instead to identify the branches that appear visually devoid of fruit. In areas where the climate is particularly harsh, however, it is preferred to postpone this intervention to the end of March when, with the arrival of spring, the temperatures become milder. Although the plant has excellent adaptability, in fact, one of the main causes of suffering is given by particularly low temperatures. The pruning operations weaken the plant causing, in case of night frosts, even serious suffering. For this reason it is sometimes preferred to wait for the

Necessary tools

To carry out the pruning of the olive tree in a workmanlike manner, first of all you need to get the right tools. A ladder and the pruner will allow you to reach even the branches that are difficult to access from the ground. To cut the branches that are thinner (with a diameter of 2/3 cm) a pair of scissors and a shears will be perfect, while for those branches that are larger in size and with woody peel a manual hacksaw will be necessary or compressed air. The parts that are difficult to reach can be treated with the aid of the pruner, that is the shear applied to a rod that can be maneuvered from the ground. It is necessary to start by removing those branches that are broken, sick or dry, using the most suitable tool based on their size. Each of the tools must ensure a clean and burr-free cut. The cut must be made at the height of the trunk of the plant.

Olive tree pruning, how to do it: Various phases of olive tree pruning

After removing all the dry and broken branches, together with those that do not produce fruit, in the external part of the crown, we continue by thinning the crown inside. Particularly high branches should be eliminated, to contain the plant at heights that guarantee maximum safety when harvesting the fruit. As for the intensity of pruning, the latter will be more or less accentuated, depending on the fertility guaranteed by the soil. Always remember that the pruning of the young olive tree must be much lighter than that reserved for older specimens. The cuts must be made starting from the top of the plant and gradually descending, always remembering to cut the largest branches first. Pruning can be classified according to the case,
