Orchidea laelia

Special features of the laelia orchid

The Laelia orchid is one of the most fascinating variants of this delicate plant with tropical origins. Its flowers are large and brightly colored, sometimes gaudy, and allow the orchid to never go unnoticed. Various species belong to the laelia, for which the aesthetic characteristics are variable, as well as the climatic and environmental needs. However, it is possible to identify a common line within which to deepen the knowledge of the specific species that one chooses to cultivate: for the care of orchids, in fact, it is important to have the utmost attention, since they are not only plants originating from tropical areas and therefore climatically different from ours, but also because they are extremely delicate. Orchids will repay the care and attention with a flowering of extreme charm, in particular as regards the laelias: these are plants with large flowers, with elongated and tapered petals, very elegant and with intense and romantic colors. A pleasure that, in the case of the Laelia, can have an evergreen character and therefore be constantly able to decorate the surrounding space.

Cultivation

The cultivation of orchids generally takes place in pots: such delicate plants would not be able to withstand the cold temperatures of winter. Laelia is no exception, even if it constitutes a somewhat particular variant within the orchid family: unlike most species, in fact, it does not fear the direct sun, which on the contrary is beneficial. It therefore does not require positioning in shady areas, but rather prefers exposure to the sun for many hours without fear of high temperatures and drafts, which instead for most orchids are lethal. On the other hand, it is sensitive to cold, so in periods with a harsh climate it is good to keep the laelia orchid inside the house. Being an epiphytic plant it needs a rocky surface on which to grow, with the presence of mosses and lichens: no pruning for this plant, used to grow and develop where the soil is more hostile. Repotting is also not necessary, precisely because it is sufficient to place the orchid on stones or wooden trunks, with a very decorative effect: it will therefore be sufficient to move the support on which the laelia orchid has taken root to bring the plant where the climatic conditions and environmental are optimal for you. It is however possible to move the plant, changing support, providing to water it enough to soften the roots and facilitate their detachment without breaking. The operation must be done delicately so as not to damage the roots. with the presence of moss and lichens: no pruning for this plant, used to grow and develop where the soil is more hostile. Watering and fertilization

The laelia orchid is a plant of great charm, which however needs a lot of daily care: it cannot be abandoned for days, because watering must be extremely regular. Their frequency varies according to the different periods and will increase according to the flowering: when it is particularly intense and the temperatures are very high, up to two waterings a day may be necessary. Being an epiphytic plant, in fact, it does not have a soil available that conserves water and retains it for slow dispersion, so it is important to be able to offer water to the plant several times. Naturally, it is a plant sensitive to water stagnation, which must never be present. Instead of adding the appropriate fertilizer to the watering water, to supply the plant that grows on a very poor surface with the necessary nutrients. Fertilization will be necessary more intensively in the period of maximum flowering, during which the frequency will increase, and then it will be reduced when the plant faces the winter. The flowering period can vary from species to species, so it is good to inquire in detail.

Laelia orchid: Diseases and pests

The orchid is a very sensitive plant to environmental variations: the laelia is no exception and from the analysis of the leaves it will be possible to recognize its state of health. Withered, yellowed, dry or deciduous leaves can denote excessive drafts or a too cold climate; dry leaves, in particular, will signal an excessive presence of direct light. From the leaves it will also be possible to understand if the plant receives the right amount of water: in any case, to see the Laelia orchid in excellent health it will be sufficient to restore the optimal cultivation conditions. On the other hand, the case of the presence of small dark or white and cottony spots, which may be the sign of an ongoing parasitic infestation, is different. In this case, timely intervention is essential because the orchidea is very delicate in this sense and every single parasite present must be eradicated quickly and completely, to avoid the subsequent development and death of the plant itself. To eradicate the parasites it will be necessary to resort to specific products, which are aggressive for them but not too much for the plant.
