Peach bubble

How to recognize the signs of this pathology

The symptoms of the peach bubble are visible on the plant already in the early stages of budding, at the beginning of the vegetative restart in spring. The small leaves that open from the buds show slight variations in color tending to red and purple. The natural green color is therefore interrupted by more or less widespread reddish streaks on the single leaf. Shortly afterwards, mainly depending on the environmental temperature, the first leaf deformations appear, initially recognizable as folds and «trailing» of the lamina. If the sprout does not show signs of the presence of the pathogenic fungus, the latter can still manifest itself even on the largest leaves with real deforming red bubbles that compromise the natural functionality of the leaf.

Damage caused to the plant

Once infected by the peach bubble, the plant undergoes a progressive defoliation which will be all the more pushed the more favorable the environmental conditions of temperature and humidity are. Due to the reduction of the leaf surface, the peach tree is in the condition of not being able to produce the ordinary quantity of metabolites and this negatively affects its development and, above all, on the production of fruit. If left untreated, this pathology can lead the plant to completely dry out over a period of about 2-3 years, since, in the absence of a sufficient number of leaves, even the youngest branch portions will not be able to be fed adequately and therefore will go away. encounter necrosis. Phytosanitary defense of the orchard

Defense interventions against the peach bubble can basically be implemented in two main ways: by chemical means or manual biological techniques. The chemical intervention on the peach tree against this etiological agent is mainly justified where the number of specimens affected by the disease is large. The main phytopharmacological product administered to peach trees is dodine, with one autumn treatment and two during the growing season. More spraying can be done in cases of particularly heavy attacks. For individual garden plants it is possible to manually remove the affected leaves and burn them. This prevents the spread of the fungus spores in the environment.

Peach bubble: Integrated fight

One way to reduce the use of chemicals in the orchard against peach bubble is to intervene only at times when the pathogen is most vulnerable. It is therefore extremely important to implement a systematic observation program of the orchard, especially at the beginning of the vegetative restart. Identifying the affected plants also makes it possible to carry out targeted and non-carpet treatments over the entire production area. Furthermore, it is important to act early on the plants, before the fungus develops its typical white down on the underside of the leaf, i.e. its reproductive structures aimed at spreading the spores in the surrounding environment. In this way, the reinfection of Taphrina deformans is counteracted the following year and, above all, it prevents the enlargement of the
