Periwinkle flower

How much to water the flower periwinkle

The periwinkle, a flower widespread especially in the woods in a spontaneous way, is frequently cultivated in Italy as a border in gardens or on balconies. The quantity of water to be administered to the periwinkle and the irrigation times are the same for both plants in the ground and in pots. The plant tolerates heat well and is not particularly afraid of drought, but it will still need to be watered regularly in hot periods, avoiding that the soil remains arid for a long time. The period in which to pay more attention for the irrigation of the periwinkle is from May to August, every 15/20 days you can add fertilizer to the water if you see the plant suffering from temperatures. Water stagnation should never be allowed in the soil, which are very harmful to the plant; in winter, on the other hand, irrigation will be very reduced. The periwinkle is a flower that loves humidity and for this reason it is advisable to spray the leaves, not the flowers, during the afternoons and hot evenings even several times in order to rehydrate it. For potted plants you can do the same or keep the surrounding floor wet.

how to grow periwinkle

Periwinkle is a simple flower to grow in Italy, both in pots and in the ground. However, exposure and ambient humidity are important. The exposure suitable for periwinkle is semi-shade but also sunny areas are fine, provided they are sheltered from strong winds and with adequate humidity. In the summer it is better not to expose the periwinkle plants below 15 ° C, if grown in the ground you can cover them with a special non-woven fabric, if instead grown in pots it will be enough to withdraw the plants in warmer areas. The ideal soil is moist, soft, well-drained and rich in nutrients. We recommend adding liquid fertilizers in the summer, or the use of earthworm humus to sprinkle on the surface of the soil, or even the use of slow-release fertilizers. Irrigation is important but must not create water stagnation. The periwinkle is a flower that propagates by seed, cutting of the stems or by division of the tufts. Sowing is the most commonly used and is carried out in spring. The periwinkle does not require special care, the dry parts and withered flowers will be eliminated in addition to the other routine operations described.

How much to fertilize the plant

The periwinkle needs a soil fertilized with mature manure or earthworm humus at the time of sowing or planting. If it had been planted in non-fertilized soil, during the first vegetative year, adequate fertilizer or fertilizer, in liquid, slow-release, or humus form will be provided. Fertilization can be done every 15/20 days during the summer, every 2 months if a slow-release fertilizer is used. It is better to choose a fertilizer rich in potassium, microelements such as iron, zinc and manganese, necessary for correct vegetative development. Fertilization is then necessary every time the periwinkle is transferred, the pot will be changed and the soil will be mixed with mature manure or earthworm humus. Alternative fertilizers, natural and homemade can be used safely. For example, the coffee grounds to be spread on the surface of the soil, or the egg shells that will be chopped and joined to the soil.

Periwinkle Flower: Diseases and Cures

Periwinkle is a very disease-resistant flower, but it is affected by parasites and insects if grown properly and in the best conditions. In fact, in case of water stagnation or excessive watering, attacks by parasites or fungi such as powdery mildew or botrytis are almost certain. Furthermore, water stagnation can cause frequent root rot and consequent death of the plant. Similarly, lack of water can create problems: yellowing leaves and falling flowers are the signs. Periwinkle is easily attacked by pests and insects when grown indoors or in greenhouses. The main attacks are aphids, spider mites, whiteflies, and thrips. To combat them we recommend the use of specific pesticides, therefore medicinal but totally natural products.
