Pruning roses

When to prune

Who doesn’t have at least one rose plant in their garden? And who has never wondered how to take care of it in the most adequate way? The rose is certainly the plant that makes the garden more alive and colorful. But taking care of it is a delicate and particular process, just as delicate and particular is the rose plant. Pruning of this species is the basic operation to perform if you want to increase the flowering of the plant. First, the main thing to remember is that the rose plant should not be pruned in the first two years of its life. This is to allow it to grow and thicken abundantly. In principle, in the years following the first two, three prunings are carried out, in three different periods of the year: a winter pruning, a summer pruning and, finally, an autumn pruning.

Pruning periods

Normally, the pruning of roses is carried out cyclically in three different periods of the year: in winter, in autumn and in summer. In the first two seasons, the pruning of roses is done at a time when the plant is now far from the flowering season. Action is taken to eliminate all those damaged parts, especially from temperatures. In particular, in the autumn season the withered leaves, while in the winter season the branches that are now dry and damaged. Conversely, pruning in the summer season is done when the rose plant is still in the flowering period. During this operation all the withered flowers are mainly eliminated to clean up the plant from parts that are now dry, thus favoring a new and more profitable flowering.

Pruning methods

In the pruning of roses, the way in which the cutting is carried out is of fundamental importance. This is one of the parameters to always take into consideration if you want to complete an optimal operation and with truly excellent results. Furthermore, taking into account all the necessary precautions, it also serves to avoid the onset of molds and fungi in the areas of the cut. The pruning cut of the roses must be done in a diagonal direction and in a precise way. This allows the rain to slide off easily, thus avoiding the formation of stagnations, which would rot that area. Furthermore, it must be borne in mind that the cut must not be made too close to the bud, but between the beginning of the branch and the bud.

Pruning roses: Tips

As mentioned at the beginning, the pruning of roses is a very delicate operation, as this species of plant is very particular. For this reason it is necessary to follow a well-organized and targeted operational and technical protocol. One of the fundamental aspects to guarantee the success of this delicate operation is the choice of the most suitable work equipment. Furthermore, the tools must necessarily be sharp, thus allowing to perform precise and clean cuts, avoiding burrs. The cleanliness factor is also of fundamental importance. The work tools must, in fact, necessarily be clean and sterilized (from the shears to the operator’s gloves). Maintaining clean conditions will thus prevent contact between the plant and pathogens.
