Repotting orchids

Indoor plants

Plants have now become excellent apartment companions, because they are able to combine the ability to furnish every class and type of space with the possibility of also giving that touch of nature and naturalness that we miss so much in a society that is increasingly distancing itself from what is not «manipulated». In reality, the plants started out as furnishing objects that nature lovers placed in their homes so as not to have to give up a healthy contact with nature due to lack of space and / or possibility. Then everything turned into the most widespread hobby in the world: for many it is not even a sought, desired, studied pastime but it is something totally natural that came spontaneously directly from the inner intentions we have.

The orchid

Many plant species have come to the fore because they have become very popular houseplants, but in this article we talk about what is the most common plant in apartments: the orchid. This small plant of tropical origin manifests itself as an apparently slender structure with a thin green stem, oval leaves rounded about at the base (in small numbers, two or three at most) and one or more flowers at the top that are the pride of this plant. In fact, it is famous because its inflorescences have a very particular shape, with the degeneration of one of the petals as a «protective panel» of the sexual structures housed in the center of the flower (as in all flowers). This is not relevant for aesthetics, because this functionality is not evident and is not even known to most people, however it helps to create the myth of this flower which is often compared to women as it recalls its characteristics: apparent fragility but great inner strength (we’ll see what it is), elegance and simplicity, charm. In fact, what we like most about the orchid is precisely that it is simple and small in size, but capable of enchanting even as a gift and interior decoration.

Repotting orchids

Obviously the orchid, despite being naturally predisposed to withstand the climate of our apartments, needs to be taken care of and this does not ignore some basic gardening techniques. One, for example, is pruning but in the case of the orchid it is practically reduced to simply removing the dry leaves because the small and not very voluminous structure of the orchid plant makes everything very simple. Instead, repotting is very important for the orchid: this plant, in more than one variant, has aerial roots, so they must not be buried (at least not totally) but must be able to absorb light and oxygen to make the plant live. . This is why orchid pots are often transparent and do not contain earth but stones, wood or any other coarse material: passage of air and light. Furthermore, this leads to very interesting furnishing solutions that are subject to various combinations. Let’s say that the repotting of the orchid should be done every two years, being careful to move it to a pot just slightly larger than the previous one and to make sure that you have the maximum drainage because the orchid can not stand water stagnation.

Features

The orchid has been defined, by us and by others, as perfect for apartment living, but why? The reason is to be found in its habitat of origin, namely the tropical forests of East Asia. In these areas of the world the orchid grows in the shade of huge trees that with their thick foliage cover all or almost all the available sun; moreover, the climate is always mild or hot but above all the humidity is very high, and given the coverage of the large trees it happens that the circulation of air at the lower level, where the orchid is located, is very poor. Well, these climatic characteristics just listed correspond incredibly to what we constantly find in our apartments, especially in the autumn and winter period, the period in which orchids grow, they bloom and live very well in every corner of the house. The important thing, as already mentioned before, is to ensure that there are never water stagnations, and this can indeed be done with a small change of air every now and then, but above all it is important to define the substrate which must be coarse, draining and equipped of a «detached» saucer that prevents the water from remaining in contact with the plant. These are very simple measures that will allow you to find great satisfaction from our orchids. draining and equipped with a «detached» saucer that prevents water from remaining in contact with the plant.
