Hanging garden: what it is

What is a roof garden? In practice it is a real green area created in small external spaces of the house, such as terraces and balconies. Already in 4000 BC, going through the deserts of Mesopotamia, you met cities rich in greenery, with palaces colored by flowers and plants. This technique inspired modern architects who developed the modern ideas of vertical gardens, urban gardens and green roofs. If you have a balcony or access to the upper terrace of the walkable house (for example for those who live in a sky-earth), you can take advantage of this space by decorating it with plants and flowers, and recreating if you have a passion for nature, a small miniature garden of eden. There are many techniques that can be used, from the most practical and economical,

Hanging garden: suitable plants and techniques

Therefore, if you have decided to create a roof garden on your balcony or upper terrace of the house, perhaps the most important phase for a good development of the idea is the design. Clearly creating it in a balcony gives less vent to the imagination, but still the conditions to be respected for an adequate development of the project persist. So the first thing to consider is your space availability. Clearly on a terrace, you can place more plants, more types, you can use the technique of pots, or if you want you can create a real green roof. In a balcony the green roof is not possible to recreate (or at least you would face a series of problems), but you can take advantage of the idea of vertical gardens, or falling and climbing plants. Another consideration to make is the type of plants. Considering that you will have to place outdoor plants, you will have to take into account the climate of your area first of all; then the direction in which your balcony or terrace goes and the height of the surrounding buildings, essential for determining the hours of exposure to light and winds.

Green garden: potting technique

The cheapest and simplest technique to use for the creation of your roof garden is that of pots. It simply consists of choosing the most suitable plants for your climate, which develop well even if planted in pots. This is the recommended technique if you have a balcony. The work is very simple, just go to a nursery, choose the plants you like best and that are adaptable to the external climate of your home, and let your imagination and your good taste do the rest. In a balcony, however, there are also other spaces that you can use, and which will give a much greater aesthetic value to your roof garden. One is the facade of the house, which you can cover with a vertical garden built with one of several possible techniques, or simply by attaching a net to the wall, and place a vine there to grow. Another usable space is the one in front of the railing. Considering that it will be the most visible space from the outside, it is always advisable to place balcony planters, plants and flowers. You can also place a creeper there if you want.

Roof garden: green roof technique

If, on the other hand, you have a terrace above the house (the flat roof to explain it better), which is walkable, your projects can range with more imagination. You can use the pot technique anyway, or, if a small expense doesn’t scare you, and you have a few free weekends to dedicate to it, you can use the green roof technique. This would make your hanging garden look like the original one in Babylon. The green roof has the advantage that it makes your terrace a real outdoor garden! The most important thing is the insulation. You certainly don’t want the humidity of the earth to pass ruining the attic. So a good waterproofing of the terrace is the key element. Once the first insulation hoods have been placed, prefabricated plastic panels can be used, already designed with drainage outlets to be grafted directly to the gutter. Above the latter we proceed with a layer of gravel, and finally the soil. Now you will have a real garden to decorate at will!
