Introduction

The irrigation system of a garden includes various elements and accessories useful for its operation. All the devices of the system have the same objective: to guarantee a correct distribution of water to the plants. This distribution can be done manually, when it comes to watering a few pots on the balcony, or through mechanical or automatic devices that, by connecting to the tap sockets, distribute the water in a calibrated and regular way. The components of the irrigation system vary according to the type of irrigation itself, but in almost all irrigation systems there are indispensable elements, such as pipes, sprinklers, control units and solenoid valves.

What are


The solenoid valves are the hydraulic device that allows you to open and close the flow of water that is distributed to the plants. Present in any hydraulic system, including industrial ones, the solenoid valves allow to dose the escape of liquid or gaseous substances. Without solenoid valves, the system water would flow out in an uncontrolled manner, affecting the results of proper irrigation. These devices are equipped with a connection for the tap sockets or for the male and female ones that accompany the various paths of the irrigation system. For correct fixing to the different dimensions of the water intakes, the solenoid valves are equipped with connection with threads of various diameters. They work with electricity, but also with an integrated battery that is activated in the event of a power failure.

How to choose


The solenoid valves for irrigationcommercially available can be of different types and sizes. They can also have different operating mechanisms (electric, battery, mechanical or manual). The choice between one model and another must be related to the type, size of the system, flow rate and water pressure. A more or less large system will also determine a certain pressure which must be considered when choosing the solenoid valve. For small systems and low pressures, it is possible to choose small solenoid valves, while for large systems with higher flow rates and pressures, it is better to prefer more powerful solenoid valves. When choosing the device, it must also be provided with covers that protect it from any leaks or water or from external adversities. A detail that should not be underestimated in the choice of solenoid valves is the water pressure drop, determined by the operation of the device. The pressure drop coincides with a decrease in the water pressure during the opening and closing phase of the solenoid valve. A sudden drop in water pressure can also lead to failure of the entire system and sprinklers. Usually the manufacturers indicate in the device the value of the pressure drop, in order to choose the most suitable model for the flow rate and pressure characteristics of your system. To avoid sudden pressure drops, it is useful to choose solenoid valves that have the same diameter as the pipes. Solenoid valves generally withstand pressures up to 175 bar. The minimum and maximum values ​​of the supported pressure are always indicated in the device. It is therefore important to choose a solenoid valve with flow rates, both minimum and maximum, perfectly coinciding with those of the system. Otherwise there is a risk of breaking the membrane that regulates the flow of water, with consequent damage to the sprinklers.

The choice of the solenoid valve is one of the most delicate phases in the construction of an irrigation system, because the regular and systematic distribution of the water flow will depend on this device. Plant irrigation systems have major differences between them, also due to the quality of the water. This can be more or less calcareous, affecting the duration and good operation of the system. The solenoid valve, in similar cases, can do a lot, contributing to the tightness of the entire irrigation system. For water that is too heavy or rich in debris, there are also solenoid valves equipped with filters that prevent the accumulation of limescale and other substances inside the operating membrane. Made of synthetic resin, the solenoid valves with filter are equipped with a stainless steel needle that allows you to clean the orifices where suspended water particles accumulate. To avoid obstructing the outlet channels of the water flow, you can also use multi-way solenoid valves, preferred in large irrigation systems. When the pressure of the system is very strong, the so-called “water hammer” can occur, that is a sudden movement of the pipes caused by the sudden interruption of the water flow. The water hammer can also lead to the rupture of the pipes and of the solenoid valves themselves.
