The hobby of working

Hobbies play a fundamental role in our modern culture. The hobby (which can be translated into Italian as a pastime) is an activity that we carry out in our free time, usually to enjoy and / or have fun both in company and in total autonomy. As can be seen from this brief description, personal hobby can be anything; and in fact it is exactly like this: there are people who practice jogging, climbing or cycling as a hobby, therefore who dedicate themselves to sports, others instead love to paint or sculpt, still others who delight in sewing. But that’s not all, there are many hobbies and pastimes; one of the most accredited is gardening: the so-called “green thumb” is the activity that follows the passion for nature, seeing it change and taking care of it, to find satisfaction also in taking care of plants and flowers. As we can see, most hobbies are also strenuous; in fact, you shouldn’t think of the hobby as a restful and relaxing activity. It can be that too, but the main goal of the hobby is to regenerate the mind, distracting it from everyday thoughts and worries simply by engaging it in another activity. And if this activity is also demanding for the body, so much the better: our body will benefit from it because it will train, and the mind will be even more distracted because it is dragged by the body. distracting her from everyday thoughts and worries simply by engaging her in another activity. And if this activity is also demanding for the body, so much the better: our body will benefit from it because it will train, and the mind will be even more distracted because it is dragged by the body. distracting her from everyday thoughts and worries simply by engaging her in another activity. Translation: pastime?

The Italian translation closest to the word hobby is the term “pastime”; it should be noted, however, that first of all the word “hobby” has practically become part of our vocabulary, being by now very common use; but not only that, the term pastime perhaps describes a simpler and short-lived activity, perhaps even occasional and not linked to a passion we have for that specific activity. In fact, “pastime” knows more than crosswords, console video games, internet research and similar actions: these are things that each of us does in our free time, but every now and then and not regularly, since they do not correspond to passions. Instead, the word “hobby” is perfect to portray the situation of an activity that engages us with perseverance and passion, that maybe we can not wait to go home just to start cutting the branches of that plant if we love gardening, to complete the construction of the engine if we love car modeling or other particular activities. Having said that, referring back to the topic of the first paragraph, there are cases in which the hobby is … working, where working represents an unusually tiring or demanding activity, which however thanks to these characteristics allows us to totally distract ourselves from the working day and commitments, totally regenerating ourselves.

The home garden

A lot of people want to own the house with a garden; the sacrifices that must be made to achieve this dream are not negligible, yet more and more people decide to launch themselves towards this goal, why? The “fashion” of the home garden was born in the early seventies with the advent of American film production in Europe and in Italy specifically; in these films and TV series you could see the beautiful classic American villas surrounded by small but delightful gardens, elegant and without any fences, and all this made many people fall in love. More than fashion, this has been a real cultural revolution, both because it was not at all fleeting, and because it is based on values and emotions that have nothing to do with the typical frivolities of today’s fashions. But the success of the garden is not due only to this cinematic “advertising”: it offers a series of additional possibilities to those who live it that are difficult to give up if you know them. It starts from the increase in value and aesthetic appeal of the house, passing through the increase in the possibilities to entertain guests in outdoor parties and receptions or to play with children in the sunlight and in different activities than usual, up to to the main reason for so many people: the garden offers the possibility of having a totally personal place in which to relax, perhaps just back from work, in the cool of a healthy and silent nature, which is there all for us without closing times and without having to give way to elderly people like in public parks, being also very sure of the total safety and cleanliness of a place belonging to our home. All this is priceless, and manages to make the owner fall in love immediately; to this are added the care and maintenance of the garden, which if done regularly and willingly can turn into a real passion and be able to distract us from negative thoughts by engaging our body in various various and healthy movements, a real hobby!

Gardening tools

Working in the garden can be a very interesting hobby, as we have extensively described in the previous paragraphs; however, like all autonomous activities, it requires a certain degree of experience, manual skills and above all suitable tools. In this case, those with a passion for gardening are quite lucky: the spade, the rake, the shovel, the wheelbarrow and the hoe are historical tools, certainly used by our grandparents and with whom we have certainly had contacts in our life, if only for all the times we played with it on the beach. Well, it will seem strange but for any garden, small or large, with any type of soil and with any kind of cultivation, these few and simple tools are all you need. Obviously there are some distinctions to be made: these tools are widely sold in the world because of their usefulness in every garden, but they are able to adapt to the size scale of every situation. It is for this reason that the small colored spade to be held in one hand is used to take care of the flowers and basil on the balcony, and it is for the same reason that in extensive industrial crops the same spade is replaced by a mechanical motor spade of big dimensions. To these differences in scale it must be added that a small garden compared to a large one has different needs, therefore, without prejudice to the basic basic tools, there are small additions that can be made to every situation.
