What are hedges and how are they classified?

The hedges, part of the plant world, are living structures whose leaves contain chlorophyll, a complex substance from the chemical point of view, but beneficial for humans, which generates the classic green color. There are numerous and very different classifications of the hedges; one, among the many, distinguishes them in traditional, with colored foliage, very low. The traditional ones are the most common; they have heights of a few meters and are characterized by evergreen essences, convenient to be cut even on the internal facade in order to obtain an almost perfect squaring so as to simulate a real green wall. of about 50 cm, used in order not to create any division between neighboring properties.

Why build a hedge in our garden?

In general, the hedges, being made up of rows of trees placed along the perimeter of the properties, have the primary purpose of materializing the boundary between them. But they also perform well to other tasks, such as, for example, to surround the gardens, protect from the wind and the sun and if they are very dense they also slightly muffle the noises; it should not be forgotten that their realization creates, in fact, a play area for the little ones. It follows that hedge plants are not bought because from the genetic point of view they do not exist. It is the man who chooses the most suitable essences according to his particular needs, places them very close to each other (usually two plants every meter) and forces them to grow in that position. Usually when we talk about types of hedges, our mind goes to the evergreen ones because they perform a covering function; however, we must not neglect alternative hedges such as flowering and mixed hedges, the latter consisting of polythematic essences. Flowering hedges are able to give us brightly colored flowers and berries even in the coldest months. Among them, a particular mention goes to azalea for the beauty of its spring blooms (on acid soils), certainly among the most chromatic in the plant world, and to forsythia which, starting from February, generates bright yellow corollas. The forsythia can reach three meters in height, as long as it is placed in a sunny position; it grows well on any type of soil, provided it is fresh, and reproduces with great ease.

Types of evergreen hedges

Evergreen hedges, useful for attenuating disturbances caused by noise, derive their name from the fact that they remain dense and green throughout the year. and a flaw. Among the merits are highlighted, an excellent covering power having shiny and robust leaves, a high growth speed of the shrubs. However, it has the defect of growing horizontally as well; in fact, over the years it has widened by almost 2 meters, thus reducing the space available. For this reason it requires two pruning per year and, therefore, a considerable burden of maintenance costs.
