Vinca is therefore the ideal plant for undergrowth, borders, isolated spots and also for growing in pots. The vinca genus is composed of about ten species of Mediterranean origin, also present in Asia and in the tropical belt of other continents. The name of the vinca plants is of Latin origin and was chosen by the naturalist Pliny the Elder. In ancient times, especially in France, it was believed that periwinkles were the flowers of witches. In many areas of Europe it is customary to sprinkle the wedding rooms of brides with the flowers of the vinca plant.

The vinca plant: cultivation

There are few rules to follow regarding the cultivation of the vinca plant. The vinca plant, the swallow of flowers, needs light and frequent watering, weekly fertilization with liquid fertilizer. The withered corollas must be eliminated and periodically the topping of the erect species must be done, to prevent them from growing too much, becoming impoverished in the lower part. The soil must always be loose and free from weeds. Propagation occurs by seed, in spring, under glass, or by detachment and subsequent burial of the branches that branch off from the mother plant and emit roots at each module, thus adhering to the soil. Four are the most cultivated periwinkles. Periwinkle is considered by some to be a toxic plant due to its vincristine content.
