Garden plants

A home garden is such a personal place that every owner (or in any case every person who lives and manages it) is free to furnish it in any way he wishes, just as he is free to cultivate any species of plant in it or to carry out its boundaries any recreational or non-recreational activity that he likes. Precisely this sense of freedom is one of the characteristics most loved by garden owners, who, to the things already mentioned, can also add the freedom to hold parties and parties that are also quite numerous and noisy (within the limits of compliance with laws and neighborhood), because with the garden it is much more serene than what you can do at home. But what are the right plants for a garden? For all that we have just said, there is no right plant in an absolute sense, in fact everything depends on one’s personal inclinations and on the desires we have, in this area we can talk about it. In fact, to give an example, if we love the garden for its ability to increase the aesthetic appeal of the house, then the «right» plants in this case are the most popular decorative plants, such as roses (or even other flowering plants ) or the cycas, extremely widespread but also very valuable and with an elegant and inimitable yield.

The vine is a plant species that is not in the very first places on the top list of the most common plants in gardens; in fact, despite being of clear local and Mediterranean origin, the vine is more of a specialized crop, that is for professionals who know how to treat it and who also do it with great material commitment to obtain from it (albeit for the simple love of what they do and therefore do not necessarily for profit) of wine or other products familiar to it. This is undoubtedly also due to the attention that the vine itself requires, because it is a plant that, for better or worse, adapts to the whole climate of our areas, but if we want to make it productive then it requires attention, labor and products that are not absolutely trivial, indeed worthy. of real operators in the sector. This is why it is not common in «standard» private gardens, while there are many in the gardens of wealthy people who perhaps love this kind of «precious» hobby (because clearly they will limit themselves to directing the work or a little more). However, this should not stop those who want a plant of this species in their very normal garden, because they may not get a high village sommelier wine from it, but they will certainly be passionate about the care of this historic plant.

Pruning of the vine

One of the most important operations to be carried out on the vine so that it yields a lot and well from a «wine making» point of view is pruning; a very important operation for all plant species, as it is possible with the right movements and «cuts» to give greater strength and health in anticipation of growth, flowering or even in giving us fruit, it takes on a special role for a demanding plant like the vine, as it allows to protect it from occasional climatic changes in cathartic periods of the annual cycle (typically the summer), as well as to model it also thinking about the works to be done nearby, first of all the grape harvest itself, much simpler and faster if made with the appropriate machinery, which, however, are useless without the correct arrangement. Let’s say immediately that the shape to be given to life from its first year of life in our cultivation is the one called «espalier»: it is the classic arrangement of the vine with various threads that support the fruiting branches in a certain linear order, separating various strips of consecutive screws. Moreover, this method allows maximum comfort in the maintenance of the plant and in the harvest of fruits, as well as giving order and air to every important branch.

Vine pruning: operations and details

Being a demanding and particular plant, the vine requires special precautions during its growth, especially in cutting unnecessary branches and sections. According to the literature and practical experience of the sector, on a vine the right number of new buds is between five and seven; obviously in this account both wood buds and fruit buds are to be considered, with the former that during their growth will constitute more of a construction branch while the latter that will bear many fruits. Unfortunately, the distinction between these two species is not absolutely clear, on the contrary: strongly dependent on the species and the climate, the distinction of the buds is more a matter of intuition, experience and knowledge of one’s own plant. However, it has been noted that the lower branches are fruitful when the spring climate has been dry enough, while with humid springs the middle and upper buds will bear more fruit than the low ones. In any case, the vine must be addressed for the espalier shape already from its first year of life, with the branches still green and the thin trunk, because only in this way, through cuts of the «deviated» branches and curvature of the younger branches, will easy to get a neat and easy to care for plant.
