Genista falcata

Shrubs are plants that must be in a garden: they are the ones that finish giving it shape, movement and color; Not to mention that there are many who tolerate pruning very well and there are others that can be used as a low protection hedge, such as Genista falcata.

This species produces very pretty yellow flowers, but it is also thorny. Do we know it?

Origin and characteristics

It is an evergreen shrub native to southern Europe, reaching a height of up to one meter. Its young stems have very strong axillary spines. The leaves are elliptical, 6 to 14mm, and the flowers are yellow, up to 1cm. The fruit is a 10 to 25mm legume, glabrous.

It is a plant that becomes really beautiful in spring, around March-April in the northern hemisphere, since that is when its flowers appear. After flowering, the seeds ripen and can be sown shortly before summer arrives.
