Glorious yucca

The yucca glorious is a very popular shrub or tree especially in the hot and dry regions of the world. It is able to withstand drought very, very well, I would even dare say better than cacti, and the high temperatures do not harm it.

Its growth rate is slow, but not excessively, if not that as the years go by you see differences. Would you like to know more about her?

Origin and characteristics

Our protagonist is a rhizomatous and evergreen shrub or small tree native to the coast and the barrier islands of southeastern North America, growing in the sand dunes. Its scientific name is Yucca gloriosa, although it is popularly known as Spanish daga, cuba hawthorn, pita, yucca, shiny yucca, glorious yucca or chamagra from Peru. It grows to a height between 0.5 and 2.5 meters, with a trunk that often branches.

The leaves are dark green or pale grayish green with yellowish edges and end with a brown thorn. The flowers are grouped in panicles 0.6-1.5m high, and are normally white, but can be purple or red as well. The fruit is 5-8cm long by 2-5cm wide and is brown, with black seeds.

What are their cares?

If you want to have a copy, we recommend you provide the following care:

  • Location: the glorious yucca must be outside, in full sun.
  • Earth: grows in all types of soils, including limestone. In pot it can be had with universal cultivation substrate.
  • Irrigation: one or two irrigations a week will be enough. In case of having it planted in the ground, from the second year on, the waterings can be increasingly spaced.
  • Fertilizer: it is not very necessary, but once a month during the spring and summer it can be paid with fertilizers for cacti and other succulents following the indications specified on the package.
  • Multiplication: by seeds and stem cuttings in spring.
  • Rusticity: it resists frost down to -4ºC.
