Limoniastrum monopetalum

You live near the sea? If so, finding plants that are actually capable of living in those conditions shouldn’t be very easy, right? But do not worry: the one that I am going to present you next is not only resistant to salinity, but also produces very decorative flowers; small, but pretty . Its scientific name is Limoniastrum monopetalum.

It is one of the typical coastal plants, which grows in soils with a low amount of nutrients and which, of course, withstands both high summer temperatures and frost. Do you want to know everything about her?

Origin and characteristics

Our protagonist is a shrub originating in some points of the coast of the Iberian Peninsula, specifically in the south of Portugal and the eastern area; It also grows in northwestern Morocco, southern Sardinia, southern Italy, southern Sicily and Crete. Its scientific name is, as we have said before, Limoniastrum monopetalum, although it is popularly known as salty.

It grows to a height of 1 meter, by 0.8-1m wide. It is a compact, highly branched plant, with bluish-gray, wavy and somewhat succulent leaves. The flowers are grouped in inflorescences at the end of the stems, and are pink.

What are their cares?

If you want to have a copy, we recommend you take care of it in the following way:

  • Location: outside, in full sun.
  • Earth: it grows in all types of soils, as long as they have very good drainage. It can also be potted with a universal growing medium.
  • Watering: water about 2-3 times a week during the summer, and a little less the rest of the year. Resists drought.
  • Subscriber: not necessary, but you can add guano to your salty specimen in spring and summer, once a month.
  • Planting or transplanting time: in spring. Transplant every 2 years.
  • Pruning: remove dry, diseased or broken branches in late winter.
  • Rusticity: resists up to -12ºC.
