Bean plant

The cultivation of the bean plant

The bean should be sown in fresh soils, free from stagnation, with neutral pH and deeply worked. Sowing, in holes, begins in March-April. Flowering occurs about two months later. When the flowers fall, instead of the white corolla you can see a green cornet that gets bigger day by day. If you want “mangiatutto beans”, harvesting is done when the legumes, being halfway through their development, are still herbaceous; if you want to collect the “budding beans”, the harvest takes place some time later, as they reach the required development; if, on the other hand, you want “beans to be shelled”, you expect the seed to be well formed and the pod to start turning yellow. Reached the length of 15 cm, the pod stops its growth, while all the nourishment is conveyed to the seeds,

The very numerous family of Leguminosae includes the bean plant. The bean is an annual plant with a fickle climbing stem. It is native to America, from which it was imported to Europe in the 16th century. The dried seeds of the bean contain 25% protein and 65% carbohydrates. The smaller, softer-skinned varieties of beans are eaten in salads, boiled and seasoned with oil. The larger varieties are cooked alone or with other vegetables. The bean plant can have the shape of a bush about one meter high, or it can be climbing with a height ranging from 1 to 4 meters. It produces a legume containing from 2 to 9 seeds. Different dishes can be prepared with beans, especially since around 150 plant species are recognized.

The bean plantit is native to Peru and the ideal temperature to allow its vegetative cycle is 18-24 degrees. Fertilization must be moderate, while normal watering in the sprouting phase and high afterwards. Sowing takes place at home. Planting is carried out between May-June, in small holes 80-100 centimeters from each other containing 4-6 seeds each. The seeds should be placed at a depth of 3-4 centimeters. After 4-15 days the seeds germinate. Harvesting takes place between July-October, ie 70-150 days after sowing. In cooking, beans are generally considered an inexpensive and modest vegetable. A characteristic dish in which this legume is present is the soup called “pasta and beans”, but also in the famous soups where beans are the main ingredient.
