Chard Seed Care: How to Plant Chard Seeds

Chard should be a basic element of any garden. Nutritious and tasty, it comes in a range of bright colours that make it interesting to grow even if you don’t intend to eat it. It’s also a biennial cold season, which means you can start in early spring and count on the fact that you won’t (usually) go wild in the heat of summer. Read on to learn more about how to care for chard seeds and when to plant them.

When to sow chard seeds

Swiss chard seeds are special because they can germinate in relatively cold soil, from 50 F upwards. (10 C.). Chard plants are somewhat frost resistant, so the seeds can be sown outdoors directly into the soil about two weeks before the last average spring frost date. However, if you want to get a head start, you can start seeding indoors three to four weeks before the last frost date in your area.

Chard is also a popular autumn crop. If you are growing chard seeds in the fall, you should start growing them about ten weeks before the first fall frosts. You can sow them directly in the ground or start them indoors and transplant them when they are at least four weeks old.

How to plant chard seeds

It is very easy to grow chard from seed and germination rates are usually quite high. However, you can make your seeds even better if you soak them for 15 minutes immediately before sowing them.

Plant your chard seeds at a depth of 1.3 cm (½) in rich, loose, moist soil. If you start sowing indoors, plant the seeds in a flat bed of individual clods with two or three seeds in each clod.

Once the seeds have germinated, dilute them to obtain one plant per cap. Replace them when they are 2-3 cm (5-7.5 cm) high. If you are planting directly into the ground, plant your seeds 7.5 cm (3 cm) apart. When the seedlings reach several centimetres (1.5 cm) in height, thin them out so that you get a plant every 12 cm (30 cm). You can use the thinned seedlings as salad leaves.
