Vegetable seedlings

In the vegetable gardens, both in the professional ones and in those of the hobbyists, different types of vegetables are grown, each of which needs different care; these treatments start from the type of sowing that must be carried out. For most of the vegetables it is sufficient to prepare the soil and sow directly at home; this happens for example for some sliced salads, for radishes or for green beans. Other vegetables, on the other hand, need to be sown, and subsequently transplanted, in order to keep only the largest and well-developed specimens, and to position them correctly. To cultivate this type of vegetables, vegetable seedlings are used, which can be self-produced, or purchased directly from producers. In the warm months, vegetable seedlings are also available in supermarkets, at the market, or directly in the nurseries. Buying the seedlings already developed allows you to have healthy specimens, and also to grow vegetables of many different varieties, which would be more complex using only the seeds.

Prepare the vegetable seedlings

Vegetable seedlings can also be prepared directly at home, or in a small greenhouse; It is essential to have seeds of excellent quality, to obtain healthy seedlings, without particular diseases, and precisely of the variety of vegetables to be cultivated: the seeds kept from year to year from the vegetables from the garden can manifest a particular susceptibility to some diseases and sometimes they can give rise to seedlings with fruits slightly different from those desired. There are many companies that are dedicated to the selection and production of high quality vegetable seeds. Once the seeds have been obtained, small trays are prepared, with rich and fresh soil, which must be previously moistened and compacted; the small seeds are scattered on the smooth surface and covered with a few millimeters of soil. The mixture must be kept cool, humid, and in a place sheltered from the cold and direct sun. This operation can be done as early as February if you have a sheltered area, such as a greenhouse. Among the sprouted plants, only the strongest and most resistant are chosen, to be planted in the garden.

Buy vegetable seedlings

Buying vegetable seedlings guarantees some undeniable advantages; first of all, plants produced by specialized nurseries will surely be healthy, robust and vigorous, and they will give us a lot of fruit. Secondly, we will also be able to buy plants of many different varieties, in order to obtain a more varied and interesting production: a bag of tomato seeds from the vegetable garden often contains up to 200 seeds, and therefore forces us to plant only seedlings of that variety. With the vegetable seedlings purchased, however, we can also think of buying a different variety of tomato for each single plant, for an unusual and more pleasant harvest. Furthermore, the plants produced by professionals are often of particular varieties, resistant to diseases, or difficult to obtain by seed at home. We always choose healthy and vigorous plants, that are free of damaged leaves or dried out areas. On the market we also find grafted garden plants; the cultured is high but a single grafted plant produces about four times more than a common plant.

Grow vegetable seedlings

When buying vegetable seedlings, it is necessary to pay close attention to the time of year in which we are: in the nursery and at the supermarket the sale of the seedlings begins very early, but not always in the best period for preparing the vegetable garden. If the climate is still cold or in any case it is not the best for the cultivation we have chosen, it is advisable to keep the small plants in a greenhouse or in a sheltered place, watering them regularly, until the climate becomes the best. Once the soil has been prepared, we will place the seedlings so as to bury them at the same level as they were in the jar or in the multi-pack, avoiding to sink them and ruin the small earthen bread around the roots. After having buried them, we water abundantly to favor the taking root.
