Evonimo

Belonging to the Celestraceae family, the Evonyms are plants that can have a shrubby, climbing habit, they can be deciduous or small evergreen trees. About one hundred and seventy species belong to this genus, which have spread almost everywhere. The name of these plants derives from the Greek language, precisely from the words eu, well, ònoma and name, and their meaning is «plant with a good name or plant with a good reputation». The meaning of the name of the plant contrasts what are the beneficial properties of the euonymus and in fact, in the most ancient times, it was used to define the gods carriers of evil with the sweetest names. This was done to thank the gods and hope for their mercy. These plants grow in height but do not exceed three meters in height, their stem is bare unlike the foliage which is very thick. The Evonimo consists of oval green leaves which, during the autumn period, take on a color variation that goes from green to reddish. During the spring period, when the plants bloom, the Evonimo gives life to a cascade of greenish or purple flowers. The fruits that develop from these plants are dark or pink colored berries.

Cultivation

As for the cultivation of these plants we can say that they do not require much care and attention. They adapt to grow in any position we place them, whether it is a sunny area or a shaded area. They are plants that do not fear the cold and even less the heat, they can withstand high temperatures quite well. They adapt easily to any type of soil used for cultivation, even if it is a poor and alkaline soil. To ensure that the plant develops in the best way, we could use a soil composed of clay combined with a part of the soil of leaves and another part of sand. The planting must be done during the spring period and well-lit positions are preferable, the plants need a few hours of direct sun. As far as irrigation is concerned, the Evonyms must be watered regularly every week from the beginning of the spring period up to the middle of the autumn period. During periods of drought, the plants particularly need to be watered otherwise they risk getting burned and damaged. During the coldest periods, watering must be decreased to the point of being suspended because it is replaced by rainwater. Remember that the soil must be dry between one watering and the next. they must be reduced to the point of being suspended because they are replaced by rainwater. Other treatments

Like many other plants, these too need to be strengthened through fertilization in order to obtain an excellent development. The fertilizations of the Evonimo are to be carried out during the winter period by administering slow release granular fertilizer or mature manure. With these procedures, the plant is guaranteed excellent germination and excellent blooms during the spring period. During the spring, once a month, it is necessary to dilute some liquid fertilizer based on potassium and nitrogen in the water that we will use for watering. It is very important for these plants to ensure good drainage in order to avoid the formation of water stagnations which are very harmful to the plants. Evonyms are excellent victims for parasitic attacks, in fact we have to observe our plants a lot and, in case we notice some “strange” signal, we must act immediately. The most harmful parasite for these plants is the cochineal and we notice its presence due to the formation of dark spots on the underside of the leaves. To eliminate these very dangerous insects we can use specific pesticides available in any store that deals with gardening. Other parasites that tend to attack these plants are spider mites, aphids and thrips. Even the latter are harmful insects for the plant, the risk is the transmission of bacteria that cause diseases in plants. The species

The most used species of this genus are four: the Evonimo fortunei, the Evonimo europaeus, the Evonimo japonicus and the winged Evonimo. The Evonimo fortunei is a small evergreen shrub of which there are many varieties that differ in the color of the leaves. Widely used for creating hedges and borders. The Evonimo europaeus is a shrub with deciduous leaves which, during the autumn, turn purple red. The Evonimo japonicus is a shrub with a compact growth and made up of very thick and resistant rounded leaves. The winged evonym is also made up of deciduous leaves, is of medium size and is highly prized for decorative purposes. The species we have just talked about are used for the creation of green spots,
