Companion plants of kohlrabi

The nature of setting up a business is that of symbiosis. That is, two or more different plants are located close to one or both plants for mutual benefit. The benefit may be to add nutrients to the soil, repel pests, protect beneficial insects or act as a natural support or mesh.

The best known example of companion planting is that of the Three Sisters. The Three Sisters is a planting method used by the Amerindians. It involves planting winter squash, corn and beans together. The corn serves as a support for the vine gourd, the large leaves of the gourd shelter the roots of the other plants and keep them cool and moist, and the beans fix nitrogen in the soil.

Many plants benefit from companion planting and the use of companions for kohlrabi is no exception. When choosing companion plants for Swedes, consider common growing conditions, such as the amount of water; Swedes have a shallow root system and frequently need water. Also consider similar nutrient requirements and sun exposure.

So, which companions of kohlrabi can be useful in generating healthier and more abundant plants?

Vegetables, as well as herbs and flowers, can be mutually beneficial in the garden, this is called companion planting. Companions of kohlrabi include :

  • Shrub Beans
  • Beetroot
  • Celery
  • Cucumbers
  • Lettuce
  • Onions
  • Potatoes

Just as some plants work well together, some don’t. Aphids and flea beetles are pests that are attracted to kohlrabi, as are cabbage and loopers. Therefore, it would be unwise to group members of the cabbage family with radish cabbages. This would only give more forage to these pests. Also, keep kohlrabi away from your tomatoes as they are supposed to stunt their growth.
