What is Tomab L’Olla?

Tomba l’Olla Sustainable Horts is a project that began at the beginning of 2013 and with which the aim is to bring traditional agriculture closer to anyone who wants to enjoy the countryside, its harvest and the consumption of its own products.

Where are the orchards located?

The orchards are located in the town of Meliana (Valencia), in the middle of the orchard, 10 minutes from the capital of Valencia, at the beginning of the bike lane in that town and 5 minutes from the Valencia Metro line 3 stop.
All the land is fenced around the perimeter, and our users have an indoor car park where they can leave their private vehicle and their own key to access it.

What farming techniques are used?

At Tomba L’Olla they are committed to organic farming, which protects the environment and also provides vegetables of superior quality and flavour. To this end, artificial chemical products are dispensed with to eliminate pests or to fertilize, replacing them with ecological techniques that perform the same function, such as biosolarization.

The biosolarization of the land to be cultivated consists of distributing manure throughout the moistened land and covering it with transparent plastic to expose it to sunlight, thus reaching high temperatures that are lethal to microorganisms, bacteria and weeds, but which in turn help the soil fertilization.

What facilities do the orchards have?

The Tomba l’Olla Sustainable Horts plots are distributed to the left and right of a central corridor through which the blanket irrigation channeling runs.

In each plot there is therefore an irrigation gate to be able to irrigate blanket and drip irrigation pre-installation in case you want to make better use of water. These plots also measure a minimum of 40 real square meters.

The tools to work the land and cultivate are shared and are stored in a room designed for this purpose, where users can leave their belongings.

Training and advice to cultivate the garden

Many times training and advice are essential, since there are people interested in cultivating their own garden who may not be encouraged to do so because they have no knowledge of agriculture or previous experience in cultivation. But at Tomba L’Olla this will not be a problem.

They will give you all the advice you need on what can be planted at each time of the year, they will teach you everything about how and when to plant and cultivate (two people in charge of the orchards are Agricultural Engineers), lending you a hand and collaborating in as far as possible so that the plot goes ahead.

In addition, if you do not have much experience, they can provide you with the seedlings or seedbeds with the seedlings already grown so that you can plant them directly in the ground and save yourself the care of the germination phase; Or, if you prefer, you can buy the seeds to plant and they teach you how to make the ridges, a task that may seem a bit difficult at first, but with practice it becomes perfect. They have a motocultor (mechanical mule) for the tasks of retovating the field and leaving it ready to start cultivating.

Have a chicken in the garden

But Tomba L’Olla not only provides you with land and advice to be able to cultivate yourself, the company also offers users of the orchards other services that will bring them even closer to organic food, such as the option of sponsoring a free-range hen and the possibility of collecting organic eggs every week (around 2 dozen eggs per month).

The hens have free and fenced land, land where they can take their sand baths, without cages or stress. They feed on specific feed for free-range chickens, corn and wheat and also eat products from the garden, such as leftover lettuce, spinach or chard. They also have a traditional nest, covered with straw where they can lay and «cobar» their eggs.

Community of Tomballeros

One of its maxims is “to make pineapple” and meet other “tombalolleros”, which is why every two months a meal is organized where all the users of the orchards attend to share experiences and hobbies. In the last meeting they were treated to a delicious paella with young garlic, artichokes, broad beans, parsley and ribs and all the vegetables were picked that same morning: from the field to the table.
