Products for fruit setting

The phases of flowering, pollination and fruit set are crucial for both fruit and horticultural fruit crops. It is during these processes, when the plant allocates a high energy expenditure and a production of endogenous hormones to facilitate the transformation of the flower into fruit, as well as to limit the early fall of both flowers and small fruits.

In parallel to this, during these cultivation phases, the fruit or vegetable can be subjected to oxidative, thermal, hydric and saline stress, which can negatively influence the success of these processes. And they do so by reducing pollen formation or hindering the proper growth of the pollen tube, for example.

Flowering and fruit set in crops

It is in these phases of flowering, pollination and fruit set, when you can act by applying products for fruit set, so that the plant has its hormonal and nutritional levels necessary to carry them out successfully.

Let us remember that optimal fruit setting, minimal floral abortions and minimal falls of small fruits are elements that directly affect the profitability of agricultural production.

Biostimulants for flowering and fruit set

Among the biostimulants for flowering and fruit set that we can find on the market is CUAJEMAX ®, a special formulation that improves flowering and favors a greater number of fruit set.

With its application, pollen viability is improved, even in unfavorable conditions for pollen quality, which occur at extreme temperatures and humidity. This quality also makes these flowers more palatable to pollinating insects such as bees and bumblebees.

In the same way, with its application, it allows obtaining a higher percentage of fruits with higher quality, as well as a greater homogeneity in the size of the fruits.

Fertilizers involved in flowering and fruit set

With the application of biostimulant products for flowering and fruit setting, also called fruit setting, possible deficiency states of essential elements for the flowering and fruit setting phases are prevented.

There are many nutritional elements involved in flowering and fruit set, as well as bioactivators and hormones. Only the proper formulation makes this type of product efficient.

Elements in the formulation such as boron, zinc complexed by seaweed extracts, for example, help the action of molecular bioactivators, stimulating the endogenous production of specific plant hormones to support the phenological phases of flowering and fruit set.

Products for fruit set in fruit trees

We must start from the fact that when we refer to products for fruit set in fruit trees, whether they are stone (peach, nectarine, Paraguayan – Prunus persica var. platycarpa, plum, apricot, cherry,…) pip (apple, pear,…), citrus (mandarin, orange, grapefruit, lemon,…) or tropical (medlar, custard apple, avocado, papaya, mango, etc.), we must bear in mind their phenological state to carry out the treatments at the right times.

Regardless of whether they are deciduous or evergreen, not all fruit trees flower at the same time. Moreover, there may be differences of even months depending on the variety.

Although many of these fruit trees delight us with their spectacular flowering, they also remind us that we are facing a delicate and decisive phase that will affect their harvest.

Faced with so many needs and energy requirements of these fruit trees, it is time to act in order to achieve the stimulation and optimization of the flowering and fruit set process, as well as improve the quality of these future fruits.

In general, during the flowering period, the climatic conditions are not optimal every year. On the one hand, there are frosts, with the well-known damage caused by the loss of a large part of the flowering or recently set fruit. And on the other, the abnormal high temperatures, which usually cause floral abortions or significantly reduce the pollination period.

Without forgetting the need of certain fruit trees to accumulate their corresponding hours of cold in order to regulate their vegetative cycle. In case of insufficient, scarce or staggered blooms can occur. In both cases, they result in a decrease in production.

With the application of the agricultural biostimulant or enhancer of flowering and fruit setting CUAJEMAX ®, for example, the key processes of flowering in fruit trees are acted on efficiently: flower development, pollination, fertilization and fruit setting. The reason is that, through its application at the right times, the synthesis of specific proteins with the highest energy demand of the crop is favored.

Time of application of the product for flower setting in fruit trees

The ideal time to apply the product for flower setting depends largely on the species and phenological state of the fruit tree. But to give some examples as a base reference:

  • Fruit trees and citrus. A treatment in the swelling of flower buds or at the appearance of the first flowers, and a second at the fall of the petals.
  • Olive and vine. Along with the pre-flowering treatment.

Time of application of the product for flower setting in fruit vegetables

As in the previous case, for the application of the product for flower setting, we provide some data as a guideline reference, although it must be supervised by a qualified technician.

  • tomato. From the second bouquet, with weekly applications or 10 days.
  • Pepper and zucchini. After the appearance of the first flowers, with weekly applications or 10 days.
  • Beans, aubergines and strawberries. After the appearance of the first flowers with repetitions every 7 or 10 days until the end of the crop.
  • Melon and watermelon. A first treatment when the first flowers appear, followed by others every 10 days until flowering ends.

Application dose of products for fruit and flower setting

Regarding the application doses of products for flower and fruit set, it will depend largely on the manufacturer, as well as the species, its state and the moment of application.

To provide data, always of an indicative nature, if the formulation is a solid agricultural biostimulant, the dose can be established between 150 and 200 grams per hectoliter, or between 1.5 and 2 kilos per hectare.

CUAJEMAX ® is marketed in agricultural supply stores and cooperatives that take care of the quality of the agro-nutritional products offered.
