Alisso

The Alyssus is a perennial and erect herbaceous plant belonging to the Brassicaceae family. The family to which this genus belongs includes from 75 to 150 species if not even more, among which about fifteen are spontaneous species. To distinguish the various species, experts study the shape and characteristics of the fruit, the shape and size of the leaves and the number of seeds. The diffusion of the Alissi prevails in the arid, sandy and uncultivated areas of Europe, North Africa, Western Asia and all those countries bordering the Mediterranean. These plants have a bushy and suffruticose shrub habit. Alissi are plants of modest size and have a woody stem in the lower part and erect or ascending in the upper part. They have a large number of leaves that are not very large and sometimes toothed and the inflorescence of these plants are formed by terminal clusters. The actinomorphic and hermaphrodite flowers have a white or yellow color, in very rare cases they are pink or purple (in the blooming phase). The petals are four and take the shape of an upside-down heart. What characterize the Alisso plants are its fruits, an orbicular or sub-orbicular dehiscent siliqua.

The Alissi have no preferences regarding the position of exposure, it is possible to place them both in sunny places and in semi-shaded places. It must be said, however, that placing them in very shady places for short periods could lead to scarce blooms. They do not prefer particular temperatures but it is advisable not to grow them in extremely cold environments because the frost risks ruining the plant in a short time. In the event that this happens, it is not necessary to replant the plant from the beginning given their ability to self-sow, so in the following spring new plants will sprout. As for watering, these plants are able to withstand short periods of drought and therefore, to obtain development in a short time, it is advisable to water the seedlings frequently and constantly. To help the Alissi in their development we could administer fertilizer for flowering plants every 15 – 20 days, this should be diluted in the water used for watering. They are plants that easily adapt to any type of soil but for an optimal result it is advisable to plant them in a fertile, loose and well-drained soil. To help water drainage, peat or sand can be added to the soil used.

Planting, repotting, reproduction

The planting takes place in the months of April – May by extracting the plant from its pot, taking care not to damage the roots and burying it in a hole deep enough to contain the roots. Repotting takes place when we realize that the pot has become too small for the plant. The reproduction of the Alisso can take place according to two methods: the first is by seed, the second by cutting. Sowing must be carried out by placing the seeds directly in the home in the months of May – June. For reproduction by cuttings, on the other hand, a cutting of 6-7 centimeters is extracted and placed in a container to ensure that the roots come out. When the sprouts are born and the plant has grown stronger we can place it in a definitive pot. The flowering of the Alisso takes place in the periods ranging from April to October. Its small, delicate and fragrant flowers are grouped in umbrella-like inflorescences. Its flowers are much appreciated for their colorful and lively appearance, in fact the flowers can be white, purple, pink and yellow.

Other curiosities

Alisso plants do not need to be pruned, the important thing is to remove the dried leaves and flowers and those damaged parts of the plant. In doing this work it is advisable to use sharp and disinfected scissors or knives in order to avoid diseases and infections or to damage the plant. Its flowers are much appreciated for their colorful and lively appearance, in fact the flowers can be white, purple, pink and yellow. Given its abundant and colorful blooms it is often associated with other types of plants such as the Iberian, the Arabian and the phlox. Through these plant associations it is possible to create flower spots that give that touch of color to our home garden. These plants are particularly resistant to pest attacks and diseases that lead to weakening. Despite being resistant, they can be attacked by parasites such as scale insects and aphids. To remove insects in the event of an attack, it is advisable to «wash» the plant with a sponge but, if washing is not enough, we should purchase a specific pesticide for the plant and the types of parasites. When we go to a store to buy an Alisso we must carefully focus our attention on the plant that is shown to us and that we are going to buy. The first thing to check is the health of the plant, which means that you have to check if the plant has already dry and damaged parts and if we notice the presence of parasites on the plant.
